At The Meadows

Parked with cover most of the mile, Fox Valley Charm turned in her third straight dominating performance in Tuesday’s $20,000 Filly & Mare Preferred Handicap Pace at The Meadows, exploding late to destroy the field by 6-1/4 lengths.

During her three-race streak, Fox Valley Charm has crushed the track’s best distaff pacers by a combined victory margin of 15-1/2 lengths.

Aaron Merriman sent Fox Valley Charm toward the front from post 8, but when the duo couldn’t reach the lead or find a seat, they paced three deep on the rim behind the cover of Shesasmokinlady and Camera Lady. When Merriman finally turned her loose, the 6-year-old daughter of Yankee Skyscaper-Fox Valley Cherub roared through the lane and scored in a career-best 1:50.4.

Four Cal baseball players honored

The California University baseball program placed four players on the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Teams on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior second baseman Garrett Brooks, junior first baseman Eric Fairman and senior outfielder Chris Wastchak of Peters Township each were All-PSAC West First-Team picks, and sophomore Corey Fogle earned All-PSAC West Second-Team status as a relief pitcher.

Brooks made All-PSAC West First Team as an infielder, as the league recognizes a fifth overall infielder. He finished the spring with a career-high .388 batting average (38-for-98) and 15 RBI, 27 runs scored and 11 stolen.

In his first year playing first base, Fairman had a breakout junior season by leading the team in several offensive categories. He paced the PSAC with 24 stolen bases and ranked sixth in the league with a .393 batting average (53-for-135) and 45 runs scored.

Wastchak received All-PSAC West recognition for the third time in his career, as he garnered second-team honors in 2017 and first-team status in 2015. He led the team and tied for fourth in the league with a career-high 47 RBI this season.

As a sophomore, Fogle had one save and a 2.08 ERA while making 10 pitching appearances – all in relief. He recorded 17 strikeouts over 13.0 innings.
