Fleming leads Monessen past Western Beaver

Cory Fleming struck out 13 and allowed only 3 hits as Monessen defeat Western Beaver, 2-0, in the first round of the WPIAL Class A baseball playoffs at Burkett Complex.

It is believed to be Monessen’s first postseason baseball victory. The Greyhounds move to quarterfinals to meet Union Monday in a rematch of last year’s classic extra-inning playoff game.

It was the 94th career win for Coach Bill Matush.

Monessen scored both runs in the sixth inning. Antonio Rhome reached on an error, Vincenzo Rhome singled to advance his brother to second and a wild pitch moved runners to second and third. Tyler Swann, who had two hits, delivered a two-run, line drive single to right to drive in the Rhome brothers.

  • A 6-run fifth inning powered Brentwood to an 8-2 win over Chartiers-Houston in a WPIAL Class AA baseball playoffs at Burkett.

Kevin Brown doubled and drove in 3 runs for Brentwood.

Matt Whitfield and Josh Colletti each drove in a run for the Bucs. zach Southern doubled.
