Thirteen local baseball and softball teams survived the weather-plagued opening round of the WPIAL playoffs and will resume play next week in the quarterfinals.

Twelve teams will be in action Monday and the Canon-McMillan baseball team will battle Plum in the Class 6A quarterfinals Tuesday at North Allegheny (4 p.m.). The Class 6A and 5A baseball quarterfinals are the only games scheduled for Tuesday.

Eight local softball teams have made it to the quarterfinals, including top-seeded West Greene and second-seeded Monessen in Class A. The Pioneers and Greyhounds each received first-round byes and will make their postseason debuts Monday in a doubleheader at Canon-McMillan. Monessen plays Riverview at 4 p.m. and West Greene faces St. Joseph at 6 p.m.

Canon-McMillan and Peters Township each won high-scoring first-round games in Class 6A to reach the quarterfinals. The Big Macs play top-seeded Hempfield Monday at Latrobe (7 p.m.) and Peters Township faces Latrobe at Seton Hill University (4 p.m.). Trinity, which was a run-rule winner in the opening round, plays top-seeded West Allegheny at Baldwin (6 p.m.) in a Class 5A contest. That game will be preceded by defending WPIAL Class 4A champion Belle Vernon against Ambridge at 4 p.m.

Waynesburg has a long trip to Plum to face Freeport in Class 3A. That game starts at 3 p.m. In Class 2A, Chartiers-Houston returns to West Allegheny to play Serra Catholic at 4 p.m.

In baseball, Ringgold in Class 4A and Carmichaels in Class 2A each received opening-round byes. They will play their first contests Monday in the final two games of a tripleheader at Washington & Jefferson’s Ross Memorial Park. Ringgold will play New Castle at 4:30 p.m. followed by Carmichaels and Shenango in the 7 p.m. nightcap.

South Fayette, also coming off a bye, plays West Mifflin at Peterswood Park (6:30 p.m.) in Class 4A. In Class A, Monessen will try to keep its season going when the Greyhounds play Union at the Burkett Complex (2 p.m.).
