In college basketball

Collin Gillespie had 17 points, including two key late free throws, and Villanova won the AdvoCare Invitational by beating No. 14 Florida State 66-60.

Gillespie made it 64-60 by connecting on a pair of free throws with 11.2 seconds left in what was a tight second half.

Eric Paschall had 15 points and Phil Booth chipped in 12 for the defending national champions (5-2).

  • Cameron McGriff had 28 points, Lindy Waters added 16, and Oklahoma State defeated LSU

The Cowboys were 6-6 against ranked teams last season. Skylar Mays scored 20 points for the Tigers (5-2), who were coming off a 79-76 overtime loss to No. 14 Florida State on Friday.

McGriff hit a 3 and Waters made three free throws during a second-half opening 15-2 run that put Oklahoma State ahead 57-39 with 13 minutes to play.

  • Orlando area native Grant Riller scored 32 points and added a career-high nine assists, Jarrell Brantley had 19 points, and Charleston beat Memphis 78-75 for fifth place in the AdvoCare Invitational on Sunday.

Riller had 33 points, the second-highest total ever at the invitational, in Friday’s 74-51 win over UAB.

  • Sug Sutton scored 17 points, Jatarie White added 16 and No. 10 Texas clamped down defensively late to beat Fordham 72-54 in the championship game of the Gulf Coast Showcase on Sunday night.

Charli Collier scored 11 and Destiny Littleton added 10 for the Longhorns (6-0), who had 14 points off turnovers and 17 second-chance points. Texas also shot the game’s first 17 free throws.

In the NHL

Noah Hanifan and Mark Jankowski each scored twice, former Coyotes goalie Mike Smith just missed his 38th career shutout and the Calgary Flames routed Arizona 6-1. Smith, making his first start in five games, got his first win since Nov. 1. Calgary led 6-0 before Clayton Keller scored for Arizona with 6:16 remaining. Three of the goals were short-handed.

Calgary coach Tim Peters wasn’t around to watch about 10 minutes of the game after he was hit in the left jaw with a puck while standing in his customary spot in the bench area early in the second period. He needed stitches and returned late in the period.

  • Brayden Point had two goals and an assist to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 5-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Sunday.

Tyler Johnson, Cedric Paquette and Alex Killorn also scored for Tampa Bay, which has won three straight games and five of six. Stefan Noesen and Jesper Bratt scored for the Devils.

Calgary wins

Grey Cup

Terry Williams helped the Calgary Stampeders end their Grey Cup misery.

Williams had a Grey Cup-record 97-yard punt return for a touchdown and Calgary beat the Ottawa Redblacks 27-16 on Sunday night after falling short the previous two years in the Canadian Football League title game.

Calgary lost 39-33 in overtime to Ottawa in 2016, and dropping a 27-24 decision to Toronto last year.

Bo Levi Mitchell – the CFL’s most outstanding player this season after throwing a league-best 35 TD passes – was the game MVP. He was 14 of 21 passing for 182 yards and two touchdowns, but also had two interceptions.

Stampeders receiver Lemar Durant was selected the outstanding Canadian after making four catches for 30 yards and a TD and adding a 22-yard run.

Redblacks quarterback Trevor Harris was 8 of 17 passes for 132 yards with a touchdown and interception.
