Another tournament, another impressive effort for the Carmichaels High School golf team.

The Mikes took third place at the WPIAL Class AA team golf semifinals at Butler’s Woodside Golf Course Tuesday afternoon.

They advanced for the first time in the program’s history to compete in the WPIAL Class AA team finals.

“I thought this could be the best team we ever had,” said Carmichaels head coach Dave Briggs. “This is the first time we made it. Two years ago, we finished fourth and just missed.”

Carmichaels cemented third place with a team score of 416 over the par-72 course. North Catholic was second, one stroke ahead of Carmichaels at 415. Sewickley Academy finished first with a score of 390.

The top three advanced.

“We’re the highest public school,” Briggs said with a chuckle.

Peters Township advanced in Class AAA, taking third place in the semifinals held at Village Green Golf Course.

The team finals will be held Thursday at Cedarbrook Golf Course.

Carmichaels was paced by senior state regional qualifier Matt Barrish, who shot a 2-over 74. Barrish had four birdies over the last 11 holes and went 39-35.

Junior Taggart Shea shot 10-over 82 and the Lohr sisters, Remmey and Delaney, carded an 87 and 90, respectively. Senior Ethan Greene shot 83. Junior Bradley Walker was the throwout with a 94.

“Ethan played the back nine first and shot 44,” Briggs said. “He shot 39 on the second nine.”

Carmichaels did not have a match in eight days before the event but Briggs was confident.

“They all did a nice job,” he said.

Uniontown, which was led by sisters Danae (74) and Adena (81) Rugola, finished fourth with a 441.

Briggs is hopeful the Mikes will do well in the team finals.

“Cedarbrook is the home course for California (High School),” he said. “We played them there and some of our golfers played in a tournament there over the summer. So we’re familiar with it.”

Bentworth finished seventh in the nine-team field with a 483. Senior Luke Dziak shot a 4-over 76.

Senior Joe Pisarcik led Peters Township with a 4-over 76 on the hilly Village Green Course. No one on the Indians team short worse than 85.

Sophomore Andrew Poon had an 80, senior Palmer Johnson carded an 81, sophomore Christian Schreiber also shot 81 and senior Ryan Marshall 85.

Belle Vernon finished seventh in the eight-team field with a score of 462. Junior Jake Caldwell led the Leopards with a 78.
