Cal loses lead, game to Kutztown

KUTZTOWN – Two big plays in the second half wiped out a California University lead and propelled Kutztown to a 34-31 victory in a PSAC cross-over game Saturday.

Kutztown (2-0) erased a five-point deficit by outscoring Cal (0-2) 15-0 in the third quarter.

The Vulcans cut the lead to three in the fourth quarter and were driving late in the game when Noah Mitchell was intercepted by Kutztown defensive back Jake Perry with 1:18 to play.

It was the only turnover for Mitchell, who completed 26 of 40 passes for 418 yards and two touchdowns. Both scores went to Chad Livingston, 34 and 84 yards.

Nelson Brown ran for 54 yards on 19 tries and scored twice. His second touchdown cut the Kutztown lead to 34-31 with 10:56 to play in the game. His four-yard run with 7:57 left in the first quarter tied the game, 7-7.

Craig Reynolds ran for a game-high three touchdowns and eclipsed 2,000 career rushing yards with 85 for Kutztown.

Quarterback Collin DiGalbo scorched the Cal defense for 389 yard, passing for 256 and rushing for 133.

Livingston had seven receptions for 163 yards and Tyson Hill had six for 113 yards.

Interestingly, both teams finished with 489 total yards.

Westminster 27, Waynesburg 12: Waynesburg kept it close at halftime, but Westminster held a 20-9 advantage in the second half and picked up a 27-12 victory in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener Saturday afternoon at John F. Wiley Stadium.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Yellow Jackets (0-1, 0-2) capped an 18-play, 76-yard drive with a 21-yard field goal by Garrett Horne.

Leading 7-3 at halftime, the Titans (1-0, 1-1) pushed its lead to 20-3 with two quick touchdowns. The last of those scores, Waynesburg blocked the PAT and Brennan Sefick returned it for two points.

Jake Dougherty made a one-yard plunge into the end zone at the 5:19 mark of the fourth quarter, but the visitors secured the road victory with a late touchdown.

Dougherty finished with 171 yards on 24 of 26 passing with one interception. Chad Walker led the Yellow Jackets in rushing with 51 yards, and Bobby Grishaber hauled in five catches for 46 yards.

Tyler Smith led Waynesburg in tackles with 10, while John-Glen Davis recorded six stops.

Westminster’s Augustus Necastro threw for 234 yards and two scores, and Bryson Paulinellie grabbed five receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown.

The Yellow Jackets travels to Bethany next Saturday.

Robert Morris 22, Virginia State 19: Jimmy Walker threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes and Robert Morris blocked a short field goal attempt on the final play to give Bernard Clark his first win as the Colonials’ head coach, 22-19 over Virginia State on Saturday.

The Division-II Trojans drove 79 yards to the Robert Morris 3 before the Colonials (1-1) blocked their second field goal attempt of the game to win after trailing 19-7 with under nine minutes remaining.

Duquesne 23, Valparaiso 21: A.J. Hines rushed for 137 yards and his third touchdown, with 2:42 to play, gave Duquesne a 23-21 victory over Valparaiso. Hines’ 1-yard touchdown run capped an 11-play, 74-yard drive that chewed up four minutes late in the fourth quarter.
