South Fayette’s youth stepping up on volleyball court

South Fayette has had one of the most consistent volleyball programs over the last couple of seasons, and in 2018, the Lions are currently undefeated in Section 2-AAA play.

One of the key reasons for the quick start is a pretty fundamental thing for any volleyball squad.

“We are playing together as a team,” Coach Scott Sundgran said. “In general, we have had a lot of people who have contributed on the court for us. I like our game management and we have been able to make the proper adjustments on the floor in matches.”

Sundran is in his 20th year at South Fayette, 17 as the head coach, and so far likes what his young team has produce on the court.

“We are young, but we really don’t show it in matches,” Sundgran said. “These girls have a high volleyball IQ and they understand their roles in our offense. Our defense has been our main strength this season, and the girls are just hustling to every spot on the floor.”

Last season, the Lions went 10-2 in section play, defeated Laurel Highlands 3-1 in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs then lost to Thomas Jefferson in the quarterfinals.

South Fayette has qualified for the postseason the last six seasons, and that includes trips to the semifinals in 2015 and 2016.

The Lions won their last section title in 2012.

“This section is tough,” Sundgran said. “Char Valley is always tough and they put a good squad on the court every night. Montour and West Allegheny have some really nice outside hitters. Every night is a battle for points. I love being in a competitive section because that just helps you down the road in the playoffs.”

South Fayette has had to rely on a strong junior and sophomore class this season with only three seniors on their roster.

One of those veteran seniors is setter Aubrey Hetland.

“As a setter, Aubrey touches the ball almost every play,” Sundgran said. “She’s the quarterback of our offense and she is a great vocal leader. She’s very intelligent and she attacks the game very tactfully. She’s mentally strong as well for us and doesn’t get rattled.”

The senior class also features Lexi Yates and Olivia Geordt. Some underclassmen who have made an impact this fall are junior Amanda Malosh, junior Nicole Yanosick, sophomore Isabella Franjione, sophomore Rachel Phoennik and sophomore Lilah Speca.

“I really like our rotations this season,” Sundgran said. “There’s no drop off in play when we put a girl off the bench in the game. Everyone is contributing to the team. Olivia and Lilah has really been dominating the outside. And once again our defense carries us most nights.”

South Fayette plays Chartiers Valley tonight and will resume section action at West Allegheny on Oct. 2.

“We don’t really focus on any long-term goals,” Sundgran said. “Everyone who plays in the WPIAL wants to win games and make it to the playoffs. We focus on the small things and play it set to set. We stress to the girls to play in the moment and to have a short-term memory.”
