High school roundup: South Fayette hands Chartiers-Houston first loss
Sending 17 batters to the plate in the first inning, South Fayette put on an offensive showcase and handed Chartiers-Houston its first loss of the season, 15-2, in a non-section game that ended after five innings because of the mercy rule Tuesday afternoon.
South Fayette (3-4) scored 12 runs in the first inning as it nearly batted through the order twice. Lauren Bernett highlighted the top half of the first for the Lions with a three-run homer. Bernett went 3-for-3 with three RBI and scored three times.
Liv Goerdt went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and drove in a pair of runs for the Lions. Mara Iagnemma also had three hits, while Ashley Micholas and Lexi Yates each had a pair of hits for South Fayette, which finished with 19 hits.
Chartiers-Houston (5-1) scored its runs in the second inning on a Nicolette Klues run-scoring double and a sacrifice fly from Lauren Lober.
Thomas Jefferson 10, Belle Vernon 6: A seven-run fifth inning gave Thomas Jefferson the lead for the remainder as the Jaguars defeated Belle Vernon, 10-6, in a Class 4A Section 2 game.
Thomas Jefferson (2-0, 4-0) was led by a three-hit afternoon from Paige Truax, who had three singles and a pair of RBI. Gracie Fairman singled and tripled, driving home two run for the Jaguars.
Ashley Joll had three hits, including a double, and three RBI for Belle Vernon (1-2, 1-5). Ally Pacak, Sophie Godzak and Vanessa Porter each had two hits for the Leopards.
Mapletown 9, Avella 5: Taylor Dusenberry had a pair of doubles as Mapletown started fast to open Class A Section 2 play and defeat visiting Avella, 9-5.
The Maples had four of their eight hits in the first inning to score five runs. After Avella (0-1, 0-1) tied the game in the fourth inning, the Maples scored three runs in the bottom half retake the lead.
Macee Cree and Katherine Fox each doubled for Mapletown (1-0, 3-0). Madi Blaker earned the win in the circle, striking out 12 through seven innings.
Emily Pollock hit a pair of singles for Avella.
Canon-McMillan 19, Brashear 0: Canon-McMillan scored 13 runs in the first inning and slugged four home runs on the day to hammer Brashear, 19-0, in a Class 6A Section 1 game.
Haley Freeman, Lauren Duke, Olivia Ulam and Elli Kotar all homered for C-M (3-0, 4-1). Taylor Eckles hit a pair of doubles for the Big Macs.
Brashear falls to 0-4 in section and overall.
Southmoreland 11, Waynesburg 7: Southmoreland hit six home runs in an 11-7 victory over Waynesburg in a Section 3 game in Class 3A.
Charity Henderson hit a solo and 2-run blast and winning pitcher Jess Matheny blasted a three-run shot and a solo one. Lexi Kilt and Faith Miller each hit solo home runs for the Scotties (2-1, 2-1).
Selena Phillips had a double for Waynesburg (0-1, 3-1).
Bentworth 7, Charleroi 3: A 6-run fourth inning propelled Bentworth to a 7-3 victory over Charleroi in Section 3-AA.
Leah Lindley struck out 10 and went 2-for-3 with a double for the Bearcats (1-1, 2-4). Katie Babirad went 3-for-4 and Lauren Navrat tripled.
Kylie Quigley struck out eight in a losing cause.
West Greene 18, California 0: West Greene opened Section 2-A play with an 18-0, three-inning road win at California. The win improves West Greene to 2-3 on the season and 1-0 in Section 2-A.
McKenna Lampe went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Jade Renner picked up the win, striking out 4 with no walks, and also had four RBI. Kaitlyn Rizor scored three runs, and Brianna Amos and Mackenzie Carpenter each added two RBI. Jersey Wise went 3-for-3, with a double, four RBI, and a stolen base.
Marley Renner added a double for Cal (0-1, 0-2), and Jenna Defrance took the loss in the circle.
Baseball
South Fayette 6, Trinity 5: Falling behind four runs in the first inning, South Fayette clawed its way back and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Trinity, 6-5, in a non-section game Tuesday afternoon.
South Fayette (6-0) scored the winning run when Ryan McGuire raced home on a wild pitch.
The Lions tied the game at 5-5 with a three-run third inning. Christian Gabriel singled home a pair of runs on a line drive to left field. Nolan Lutz walked with the bases loaded bring in the tying run.
Joey Alcorn threw three scoreless innings and didn’t allow a hit to earn the victory.
Camden Zaken went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs for Trinity (4-3), which had its three-game winning streak snapped.
Monessen 12, Bentworth 2: Eleven runs over the first two innings paced Monessen to a 12-2, five-inning non-section victory over Bentworth.
Tyler Swann had two doubles and an RBI for Monessen (1-1). Vincenzo Rhome went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Marcus Dansmore drove in two runs, and Darnell Howell knocked in three. Cam Frollo had three hits.
Josh Young went 2-for-2 with a double and scored a run for Bentworth (2-3).
Charleroi 9, Washington 3: Charleroi scored eight runs over the first three innings in a 9-3 victory over Washington in a Section 3-AAA game.
Justin Day wen 3-for-4 with an RBI and Mario Griffin had two hits and scored a run for Charleroi (1-0, 3-1).
Jarrod West struck out three for Wash High (0-1, 1-4).
OLSH 10, Burgettstown 0: Jeff Zick had two doubles and three RBI as Our Lady of Sacred Heart downed Burgettstown in four innings, 10-0, in a non-section game.
OLSH (4-1) had a 4-0 lead after the first inning and extended that advantage with a pair of runs in the second and three more in the third.
Peter Fabiano earned the win for the Chargers.
Burgettstown suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 2-1 overall.
McGuffey 4, Keystone Oaks 2: Ryan Sullivan pitched a complete game to lead McGuffey over Class 3A Section 3 foe Keystone Oaks, 4-2.
Sullivan struck out seven, didn’t walk a batter and limited Keystone Oaks (0-1, 1-2) to single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Jake Orr tripled for McGuffey (1-0, 2-2).
Fort Cherry 4, Avella 1: Fort Cherry scored a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to down Avella, 4-1, in a non-section game.
Fort Cherry moved to 3-1 and Avella fell to 0-1.
