High school baseball roundup: Robinson keeps Waynesburg on top
Luke Robinson pitched six shutout innings and drove in two runs as Waynesburg remained atop the Class 3A Section 3 standings with a 7-0 victory over visiting Charleroi on Tuesday.
Robinson struck out nine and did not walk a batter over six innings. He left after throwing 88 pitches and yielding three singles. he turned the game over reliever Tyler Switalski in the seventh. Switalski completed the shutout by retiring all three batters he faced.
Robinson gave Waynesburg (4-1, 5-2) all the runs it would need with a two-run single in the first inning. The Raiders tacked on five more runs in the fourth inning.
Kyle Blasco had a double, and Trevor Stephenson and Switalski each scored two runs.
Waynesburg is part of a three-way for first place in the section with Keystone Oaks and McGuffey.
Charleroi fell to 1-3 in the section and 3-5 overall.
Carmichaels 7, Frazier 2: Matthew Barrish pitched 5 2/3 strong innings and went 3-for-4 at the plate, Gavin Pratt drove in two runs and Carmichaels pulled away late for a 7-2 victory over host Frazier in Class 2A Section 1.
Carmichaels improved to 3-1 in the section and 7-1 overall. The Mikes were locked in a 2-2 tie before Carmichaels took the lead for good by pushing across two runs in the fifth inning. The Mikes added three more runs over the final two innings.
Dylan Wilson and Stush Ferek each had a double for the Mikes.
Barrish struck out six and allowed only two runs (one earned). Drake Long got the final four outs.
Shane McGavitt had three singles from Frazier (3-1, 7-1).
Avella 10, Burgettstown 8: Derek Tarolli went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs as Avella built an early lead and held off Burgettstown 10-8 in a non-section game at Wild Things Park.
Avella (3-4) led 5-1 after one inning and 7-3 after two. Burgettstown (2-6) pulled to within 7-5 after three innings but could get no closer.
Nick Pollock scored three runs for Avella to back the winning pitching of Noah Taylor, who went five innings. Pollock got the final six outs for a save.
John Baronick had three singles for Burgettstown and Logan Ayers drove in a pair of runs.
McGuffey 10, Southmoreland 2: Chad Fleishauer went 2-2 with 3 RBI to help McGuffey to a 10-2 win over Southmoreland in a Section 3-AAA game.
Austin Beattie drove in two runs and scored three times for the Highlanders (4-1, 5-3). Jake Orr went 3-for-5 and Brock Wallace hit a double. Ryan Sullivan struck out seven.
Ben Zimmerman double for Southmoreland (0-3, 2-5).
Keystone Oaks 10, Beth-Center 0: Sam Tortorella struck out 12 and allowed only two hits to help Keystone Oaks to a 10-0, six-inning win in Section 3-AAA.
Colby Rockacy went 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs for KO (4-1, 5-2). Mason Brooks and Jeremy Wytaz hit doubles.
Dylan Dingle and Andrew Bowers had the hits for B-C (3-2, 3-5).
Bethel Park 11, Canon-McMillan 6: Four different Bethel Park players drove in two runs each and the Black Hawks defeated visiting Canon-McMillan 11-6 in a showdown for second place in Class 6A Section 3.
Bethel Park (4-1, 7-2) forged an 8-0 lead in the fourth inning before Canon-McMillan (3-2, 7-4) mounted a comeback by scoring six times in the sixth inning to close to within 8-6.
The Black Hawks secured the win with a three-run bottom of the sixth.
Eric Chalus pitched 5 2/3 innings for the win. Kevin Kogler, who doubled for the Black Hawks, got the final four outs in a relief role.
Cam Weston hit a solo homer for Canon-McMillan and Michael Murano doubled.
Shaler 5, South Fayette 2: Shaler scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning, including the go-ahead tally on a squeeze play, as the Titans edged host South Fayette 5-2 in Class 5A Section 2.
Winning pitcher Hunter Boyan threw a complete game and Shaler (2-1, 7-3) took advantage of three South Fayette errors. All five runs by the Titans were of the unearned variety.
Nolan Vertullo was 2-for-3 with two doubles for South Fayette (1-2, 3-3). Eli Snider also doubled.
Belle Vernon 2, McKeesport 0: Erik Pietrantoni fired a four-hit shutout as Belle Vernon blanked visiting Mckeesport 2-0 in Class 4A Section 3.
Pietrantoni struck out nine, walked two and allowed only a pair of singles as the leopards improved to 3-2 in section and 4-3 overall.
Andrew Sokol drove in both runs with a second-inning single.
Mt. Lebanon 10, Peters Township 3: Mt. Lebanon scored nine runs over the first four innings and dealt Peters Township a 10-3 defeat, the first loss in Class 6A Section 3 for the Indians.
Mark Lehamn had a home runs and two RBI for PT (4-1, 7-4).
Mt. Lebanon is 3-2 in section and 6-6 overall.
