High school softball roundup: Dobrzynski, McGuffey blank B-C
Shelby Dobrzynski fired a three-hit shutout and Brin Hunter hit an inside-the-park home run as McGuffey blanked host Beth-Center 6-0 in Class 2A Section 3 softball action Tuesday.
The was scoreless until the fourth inning when McGuffey scored two runs. The Highlanders (3-5, 3-6) added two more in the fifth and an additional two runs int he sixth.
That was enough offense for Dobrzynski, who struck out nine and allowed only one walk.
Beth-Center is 0-8 in section and 1-8 overall.
West Greene 17, Monessen 0: Eight different players had at least one hit as West Greene quickly defeated Class A Section 2 foe Monssen in three innings, 17-0.
Kaitlyn Rizor had a double and triple for West Greene (6-0, 10-3). Jade Renner went 2-for-3 and joined Kylie Meek with a shortened perfect game on the mound. The two combined to strike out six of the nine batters they faced.
Monessen falls to 1-5 in the section and 1-8 overall.
Thomas Jefferson 5, Belle Vernon 1: Bella Bucy scattered five hits and Thomas Jefferson pulled away late for a 5-1 victory over host Belle Vernon in Class 4A Section 2.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning and the score remained 1-1 until TJ scored two in the fifth. The Jaguars (6-2, 10-2) tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Bucy walked only one and struck out six.
Sophie Godzak drove in the lone run for Belle Vernon (3-6, 5-10).
Charleroi 2, Bentworth 1: Two first-inning runs proved to be enough as Charleroi held on to defeat Bentworth, 2-1, to move into the fourth and final playoff spot in Class 2A Section 3.
Katie Reed hit an RBI single and Kylie Quigley scored the second run with a sacrifice fly to take the 2-0 lead. Quigley then limited the Bearcats with a strong pitching performance, allowing one run on four hits while striking out five for the victory.
Savannah Adams tripled for Bentworth (3-6, 6-9), which has lost three of its last four games to fall to fifth place in the section standings.
Southmoreland 12, Waynesburg 9: Southmoreland clubbed four home runs and scored two runs in three of the last four innings to down host Waynesburg, 12-9, in a Class 3A Section 3 game.
Faith Miller, Abby Fullem, Tyson Martin and Maegan Shetterly all went deep for Southmoreland (6-3, 7-3). Miller joined teammate Lexi Klait with four hits for the Scotties.
Rachel Elsenheimer had another productive day at the plate for Waynesburg (2-5, 5-6), going 4-for-4 with a double and home run. She drove in four runs.
Canon-McMillan 15, Brashear 0: Sydney Senay and Taylor Eckles each had three hits and drove in four runs as Canon-McMillan extended its winning streak to three games with a 15-0 win over Brashear in Class 6A Section 1.
Senay and Eckles were two of the five Big Macs to finish with a multi-hit game.
Lindsay Schmidt went 2-fo-3 with a double and scored twice. Elika Mowery and Elli Kotar both had two hits for C-M (7-3, 8-4).
Brashear falls to 1-9 in section and overall.
Jefferson-Morgan 12, Avella 9: After surrendering the lead in the top half of the fourth inning, Jefferson-Morgan answered right back with a five-run bottom half and went on to avoid an upset by downing Avella, 12-9, in Class A Section 2.
Trailing 4-1 entering the fourth, Avella (0-5, 0-8) erupted for six runs to take a 7-4 lead. The Rockets then retook the lead for the remainder.
Jasmine Demaske went 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and scored three times for J-M (5-1, 6-3).
Aaleyah Nardozi and Paige Lawerence each had two hits for the Eagles.
