High school baseball roundup: 10th inning is perfect for Peters Township, Ringgold
Mac Ciocco’s one-out single in the top of the 10th inning scored Sam Quinn and gave Peters Township a 5-4 victory over Bethel Park in a Class 6A Section 3 baseball game Monday.
Section-leading Peters Township (8-1, 11-4) moved 1 ½ games ahead of second-place Bethel Park (6-2, 10-3).
Peters Township took a 2-1 lead in the sixth, scoring the go-ahead run on an error. Bethel Park, however, forced extra innings by scoring the tying run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
PT forged a 4-2 lead in the ninth, getting RBI doubles from both Dax Ploskina and Jackson McCloskey. Bethel Park again tied the score in the bottom of the ninth on a two-out, two-run single.
Mark Lehman threw four innings of relief and was the winning pitcher.
Ringgold 6, Thomas Jefferson 5: Sam Daerr scored on a squeeze bunt by Travis Drusbasky in the bottom of the 10th inning as Ringgold rallied to beat Thomas Jefferson, 6-5, in a battle of the top two teams in Class 4A Section 3.
The win gives defending state champion Ringgold (9-1, 10-3) a two-game lead over Thomas Jefferson (7-3, 9-5).
The Rams, however, had to rally in remarkable fashion. Thomas Jefferson scored four runs in the top of the ninth to take a 5-1 lead. Ringgold answered with four runs of its own in the bottom of the ninth, scoring the final two on consecutive two-out RBI doubles by Nick Kolano and Chase Angotti.
The Rams got a leadoff double by Daerr in the 10th and advanced him to third with no outs.
Nate Pajak was the winning pitcher in relief.
Chartiers-Houston 6, Bentworth 5: Roman Lombardi went 3-for-4 and hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh as Chartiers-Houston rallied for a 6-5 victory over Bentworth in Class 2A Section 1.
Chartiers-Houston (7-1, 9-3) remains tied for the section lead with Carmichaels.
Bentworth (3-5, 7-7) led 5-2 before Chartiers-Houston started its comeback by scoring two runs in the sixth. The Bucs tied the score at 5-5, scoring a run on a fielder’s choice, which set up Lombardi’s single to right field, which drove in Alex Siege.
Zack Baird was the winning pitcher with two innings of relief. Austin Kuslock had a double for C-H.
Isiah Russell had a double and two RBI for Bentworth. Justin Kisner also doubled.
Carmichaels 8, Fort Cherry 4: Carmichaels erased a late deficit by scoring a run in the sixth inning and five more in the seventh to beat host Fort Cherry 8-4 in Class 2A Section 1.
The win keeps Carmichaels (7-1, 11-1) tied for the section lead with Chartiers-Houston.
Fort Cherry (4-4, 7-6) led 3-2 after five innings but Carmichaels tied it in the sixth. The Mikes took the lead in the seventh on an RBI single by Al Cree. Stush Ferek broke open the game with a three-run double that made it 8-3.
Matt Barrish was the winning pitcher in relief. Gavin Pratt had a double for the Mikes.
Hunter Terpack went 3-for-4 with a double for the Rangers.
McGuffey 4, Beth-Center 1: Braden Kay pitched five strong innings and hit a two-run single as McGuffey defeated Beth-Center 4-2 in a key Class 3A Section 3 game at Wild Things Park.
The win keeps McGuffey (7-1, 8-3) tied with Keystone Oaks for first place in the section. The Highlanders have won four in a row. Beth-Center (6-3, 6-7) sits in third place.
Kay’s two-run single gave McGuffey a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Two more runs crossed home plate for the Highlanders in the fifth and that was enough support for Kay and reliever Ryan Sullivan, who earned a six-out save. The duo combined on a two-hitter, which including a double by the Bulldogs’ Dylan Dingle.
Waynesburg 9, Southmoreland 3: Tyler Switalski scored three runs and drove in three others, and Evan Zimmer fired a five-hitter as Waynesburg defeated Southmoreland 9-3 in a Class 3A Section 3 game.
The win helped Waynesburg (5-3, 6-4) improve its postseason chances. The Raiders scored six runs over the first two innings and that was all Zimmer needed as he struck out eight, walked only one and gave up three unearned runs.
Switalski and Nick Zator each doubled for Waynesburg.
California 15, Mapletown 0: California scored 15 runs on only four hits as the Trojans took advantage of 14 walks by four Mapletown pitchers as the Trojans rolled to a 15-0 victory in three innings in Section 2-A.
The win keep California (8-0, 10-1) unbeaten in the section. Winning pitcher Brody Conner threw a three-hitter and struck out five.
Mapletown is 0-6 in section and 0-9 overall. Chuckie Lash had a double for the Maples.
Burgettstown 5, Frazier 4: With one out and the bases loaded, Burgettstown turned a 1-2-3 double play to end the game and defeat Frazier, 5-4, in Class 2A Section 1.
The double play ended a threat and the Blue Devils’ nine-game losing streak.
Burgettstown (1-7, 3-9) took its one-run lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jackson LaRocka singled home Dante Gianfranceso. Scott Ferris had a pair of hits for the Blue Devils.
Frazier (2-6, 5-7), which got back in the game with a three-run fifth, failed to score in each of the last two innings.
Aiden Shetterly went 3-for-4 for the Commodores.
Keystone Oaks 15, Washington 0: Sam Tortorello had a pair of hits and drove in three runs as Keystone Oaks defeated Washington in four innings, 15-0, in a Class 3A Section 3 game.
Jeremy Wypiaz and Mason Brooks both doubled for Keystone Oaks (7-1, 9-2), which remained atop the section standings by scoring multiple runs in all our innings.
Washington falls to 0-8 in the section and 2-11 overall.
Monessen 17, Geibel Catholic 0: Cam Frolo struck out seven and did not allow a hit as Monessen defeated Class A Section 2 foe Geibel Catholic in three innings, 17-0.
Frolo helped his own cause with two hits and two RBI. Tyler Swann had two hits and Dawayne Howell and Jack Sacco each drove in a pair of runs for Monessen (6-2, 7-5).
Geibel drops to 0-5 in the section and 0-7 overall.
South Fayette 6, Mars 5: Tyler Sharp hit a walk-off single in the eighth inning to score John Babstibner as South Fayette defeated Mars, 6-5, in a Class 5A Section 2 game.
Joey Alcorn, who was the winning pitcher after coming entering in the top of the eighth, went 2-for-3 and scored. Eli Snider had a pair of hits and drove in two runs for South Fayette (4-3, 10-4).
The loss ends a three-game winning streak for Mars (4-3, 9-5).
