Corey Wise threw a two-hitter, Ben Jackson drove in three runs and West Greene moved closer to a playoff berth with a 10-0 five-inning victory over Avella in Section 2-A.
The Pioneers (5-4, 8-6) started fast, scoring four runs in both the first and second innings. Jackson led West Greene at the plate with a triple and his three RBI. Wise helped his own cause with a triple.
Wise struck out six, walked one and yielded only two singles by Avella (3-5, 4-7).
Chartiers Valley 3, Trinity 0:
Jason Orzechowski threw a five-hit shutout and scored a run, lifting Chartiers Valley to a 3-0 victory over host Trinity in Class 5A Section 3.
The win pulls Chartiers Valley (3-5, 3-10) to within a half-game of Trinity for the final playoff berth out of the section.
An RBI groundout by Louis Kearney gave CV a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and that was enough offense for Orzechowski, who struck out five and did not walk a batter. The Colts increased their lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the fifth.
Trinity’s Camden Zaken threw a seven-hit complete game and had two of the Hillers’ hits.
Jefferson-Morgan 27, Mapletown 0, 3 inn: Every player in Jefferson-Morgan’s lineup drove in at least one run and scored at least two in a 27-0 victory over Mapletown in a Section 2-A game.
Kyle Clayton, Jake Broadwater, Cole Tretinik and Owen Maddich each had three RBI for the Rockets (4-3, 4-7). Bryce Bedilion, Tretinik and Maddich each scored four runs. Maddich, Clayton and Easton Hanko each hit a double.
Mapletown (0-7, 0-10) gave up 17 walks and made two errors.
Softball
Beth-Center forged a nine-run lead after three innings, saw California cut the gap to two runs after five but scored the game’s final four runs to beat the Trojans 16-10 in a nonsection game.
The game was stopped the top of the seventh inning because of rain.
Beth-Center improves its record to 2-10 and California is 2-11.
Track and field
Mid Mon Track Classic:
The Elizabeth Forward girls and Belle Vernon boys came won team titles Monday at the Scott Frederick Mid Mon Track Classic hosted by Ringgold.
EF scored 116½ points for the girls title. Brownsville was second with 92 and Belle Vernon third with 79.
Belle Vernon amassed 160 points for the boys title. Ringgold placed second with 132 points and Beth-Center was third with 82.
Belle Vernon’s Hunter Martin had a solid all-around performance, winning the 110 high hurdles (15.12), 300 hurdles (42.46), long jump (20-7½), and triple jump (42-6½). Teammate Isaac Evans finished first in the 800 (2:04.38).
Ringgold won the 3,200 relay in 8:40.01 and 1,600 relay with a time of 3:39.75. Jake Gorman sprinted for a first-place finish in both the 100 (11.42) and 200 (23.08). He led a top-3 sweep in the 400, finishing first in 53.46 seconds. Eric Obringer was second and Montell Carlock finished third.
The Rams’ Lucas Pajak won both the 1,600 (4:45.85) and 3,200 (10:15.58).
The Ringgold girls closed the meet on the track by winning the 1,600 relay in 4:31.27.
Belle vernon’s girls received first-place performances from Sydney Baciak (100 high hurdles, 16.33), Hannah Seitzinger (400, 1:01.16), Grace Henderson (high jump, 5-1), and Ezra Johnson (discus, 110-4).
Beth-Center’s Sydney Urbine won the 1,600 in 5:52.30 and 800 in 2:40.34. The boys 400 relay finished first in 46.58, and Jordan Blackburn was first in the discus with a throw of 147-4.
California’s Makayla Boda won the 300 hurdles (48.69), and was second in the 100 high hurdles (16.89) and long jump (14-10). Teammate Jelani Stafford finished first in the shot put (46-7) and Harry Lallier won the javelin (137-5).
Monessen’s Darnel Howell won the high jump (6-3) and was second in the 200 (23.48).
Taylor Leonetti gave Bentworth first-place points in the 3,200 (13:18.56). She was third in the 1,600 in 6:08.07.
Charleroi’s Bella Skobel was a mere .04 seconds from a top-3 finish in the 400. The Falcons’ Noah Diggs missed a top-3 finish in the 800 by .46 seconds. Elizabeth Forward’s Samantha Kracun was ¾ of inch shy of a top-3 finish in the triple jump.
