High school basketball roundup: Wash High boys win in double OT; Peters Twp. girls stay undefeated

Washington outscored Waynesburg 4-0 in the second overtime to take a 44-40 victory in a non-section boys basketball game Saturday night.

Dan Ethridge led the Prexies (10-7) with 20 points and Isiah Walton added 10 points. Ethridge hit a layup and Caleb Jackson a jumper in the second overtime to secure the win.

Lucas Garber tossed in a game-high 24 points for Waynesburg (9-11). His three-point shot with :06 left in the first overtime tied the game, 40-40, and sent it into a second extra period.

Washington led 11-5 after one quarter and 19-13 at the half. Waynesburg took a 31-29 edge after three quarters. The Prexies outscored the Raiders 8-6 in the fourth quarter to force OT.

Belle Vernon 75, Ringgold 67: Cam Nusser scored 36 points and Belle Vernon gave its postseason chances a big boost with a 75-67 upset of visiting Ringgold in Class 4A Section 3.

Belle Vernon (3-6, 6-14), which is battling Waynesburg and Elizabeth Forward for fourth place and the final playoff spot from the section, scored 29 points in the first quarter while forging a double-digit lead.

Ringgold (5-4, 12-6) outscored the home team 20-13 in the second to cut the halftime deficit to 42-38.

The Leopards used an 18-8 advantage in the third to extend their lead to 60-46.

Nusser had five three-pointers, and teammates Jake Sepesky, Jake Haney, Larry Callaway and Hunter Ruokonen also added a three. Sepesky pulled down 10 rebounds.

Belle Vernon’s Mitch Pohlot had 18 points and 16 rebounds for a double-double. Sepesky had 10 rebounds.

Chris Peccon led the Rams in scoring with 26 points and Jaden Taylor had 18, Luke Wyvratt 11 and Demetrius Butler 10.

The Leopards are at Elizabeth Forward (2-6, 6-13) on Tuesday in their section finale. Belle Vernon guarantees itself a spot in the postseason with a win.

Monessen 96, Avella 31: Monessen put seven players in double figures and scored 62 first-half points en route to a 96-31 win over host Avella that clinched the Section 2-A title for the Greyhounds.

Darnell Howell led the Greyhounds’ balanced scoring with 16 points. Antwan Tucker followed with 14 points, Devin Whitlock had 13, Dishon Howell scored 12, Marquell Smith 11 and Jalen Brice 10 and Carlton Jones 10 each. Monessen is 1-0 in section and 12-7 overall.

Avella (4-6, 6-13) received eight each from Tanner Terenesky and Tyler Cerciello.

Sewickley Academy 78, Burgettstown 54: Isiah Warfield led four Sewickley Academy players in ddouble figures with 30 points and the playoff-bound Panthers pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat visiting Burgettstown 78-54 in Class 2A Section 3.

Sewickley Academy (7-3, 10-7) led by only 15-14 after one quarter, 33-30 at halftime and 54-47 at the end of three quarters. The Panthers led outscored the Blue Devils 24-7 in the pivotal fourth quarter.

Warfield, who made 10 of 16 shots, also grabbed 11 rebounds and had five assists. John DelVecchio had 16 points, Max Belt 13 and Donale Belt 11.

Cole Shergi and Scott Ferris each scored 14 points to lead Burgettstown (2-8, 8-11). Kevin Poirier scored 12. Shergi made four three-pointers.

West Allegheny 51, South Fayette, 2 OTs: Jackson Faulk scored 14 points and West Allegheny outlasted South Fayette, 51-48, in double overtime in a Class 5A Section 2 game.

West Allegheny (5-7, 8-12), which is tied with Thomas Jefferson for the final playoff spot in the section, outscored South Fayette 8-5 in the second overtime.

Zach Logan had 12 points and Trevon Jones scored 10 for the Indians.

Connor Mislin tallied a game-high 15 points for South Fayette (3-9, 7-11) and Drew Franklin scored 10. The Lions have lost six in a row.

Girls results

Peters Township 64, North Catholic 53: In a game featuring two of the top girls basketball teams in the WPIAL, Peters Township had three players score in double figures, including a team-high 25 from Makenna Marisa, to defeat North Catholic in a non-section game, 64-53.

Edging North Catholic (17-2) in all four quarters, the Indians built their lead with an 18-point second quarter to take a 33-24 advantage into halftime.

Journey Thompson had 16 points and 10 rebounds, Mackenzie Lehman added nine points and 11 rebounds and Isabella Mills scored 12 points for Peters Township (19-0).

North Catholic’s Tess Myers led all scorers with 27 points.

Avella 60, Jefferson-Morgan 19: Brianna Jenkins, Colleen Kinney and Bess Lengauer all scored 12 points for Avella to lift the Eagles over visiting Jefferson-Morgan, 60-19, in a Class A Section 2 game.

Avella (8-2, 14-4), which has already clinched a playoff spot, quickly found its balanced offense. The Eagles scored 21 points in the first quarter and 23 in the second to lead 44-10 at halftime.

Breanna Lloyd also scored 10 points for Avella.

Jefferson-Morgan (2-8, 5-13) was paced by Savannah Clark’s seven points.

Mapletown 46, Geibel 15: Clinging to fourth place in Class A Section 2, Mapletown went on the road and earned a much-needed win over Geibel Catholic, 46-15.

The victory keeps the Maples, who are 5-5 in the section and 10-8 overall, one game ahead of Monessen for the final playoff spot.

Taylor Dusenberry scored 16 points and Kelsi Smith finished with 13 for Mapletown. The Maples combined balanced scoring with suffocating defense, holding Geibel (0-11, 1-17) to four points in the first half.

Rebecca Perkins and Alex Caldwell each scored four points for the Gators.

Washington 56, Waynesburg 45: Carley Allen was the only player for either team to score in double figures as Washington’s held onto a big, first-half lead to defeat Waynesburg, 56-45, in Class 3A Section 2.

Allen scored 18 points as the Prexies, who have won three straight to improve to 10-2 in the section and 15-4 overall, took a 34-13 lead into the half.

Waynesburg (1-11, 6-14) tried making a comeback in the second half with 13 points in the third quarter and 19 in the fourth. Clara Paige Miller led the Raiders with nine points.

McKeesport 53, Belle Vernon 38: McKeesport dominated the second and fourth quarters to upend Belle Vernon, 53-38, and is now in a two-way tie for third place with the Leopards in Class 4A Section 3.

Entering Saturday’s make-up one game behind Belle Vernon (8-4, 12-8) in the section standings, the Tigers outscored Leopards 27-14 in the two quarters to end both halves.

Jhayla Bray led McKeesport (8-4, 10-7) with 13 points. Nevaeah Stepanik and Laila Taylor provided secondary scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Rachel Wobrak scored a game-high 16 points for Belle Vernon, while Lindsday Steeber added 10.
