High school basketball: Playoff preview? Final surge gives Trinity girls win

Riley DeRubbo converted a go-ahead three-point play with 41 seconds remaining and added two game-clinching free throws moments later as Trinity edged host Franklin Regional 45-42 Monday night in a battle of teams headed to the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs.

Trinity (12-11) trailed by one point at halftime before taking a 36-31 lead into the fourth quarter. Franklin Regional (16-6), the runner-up in Section 2, regained the lead in the fourth quarter and led by two points when DeRubbo’s three-point play put Trinity on top, 43-42. DeRubbo’s two insurance free throws capped an 8-for-8 night at the stripe for the junior. She finished with a team-leading 16 points.

Sophomore Courtney Dahlquist also was in double figures with 10 points for the Hillers.

All but five of Franklin Regional’s points came from two players: Cali Konek had a game-high 21 points and Jordan Yaniga scored 16.

Washington 67, Chartiers-Houston 24: Washington will take a six-game winning streak and plenty of momentum into the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs after the Prexies rolled to a 67-24 victory over visiting Chartiers-Houston in a nonsection game.

Washington (18-4) had too much Carley Allen for C-H (8-14), which is headed the playoffs in Class 2A. Allen scored a game-high 28 points to power the Prexies, who led 30-4 after one quarter and 47-16 at halftime.

Zamierah Edwards and Dominique Mortimer each scored nine points for C-H.

Brownsville 42, California 38: California’s fourth-quarter rally fell just short as host Brownsville held on for a 42-38 nonsection victory.

Brownsville (11-11) held a 16-point advantage after the third quarter. California (10-10), however, pulled to within two points late in the fourth quarter but Brownsville was able to hold on for the win that gave the Falcons a .500 season.

Brownsville’s Aniya Tarpley scored a game-high 16 points. Alexis Carson had 10.

Makayla Boda led California in scoring with 13 points.

Canon-McMillan 62, Elizabeth Forward 50: Two players had double-doubles to lead Canon-McMillan to a 62-50 victory over Elizabeth Forward in a non-section game.

Tamara Mathis scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Nayah Williams tossed in 12 points and snagged 10 rebounds for the Big Macs (10-12), who led 19-3 after one quarter. Abby Daniels had a team-high 17 points.

Elizabeth Forward (15-7) was led by Abigail Bickerton’s game-high 23 points and Julia Jenkins’ 11 points.

GCC 71, Monessen 41: Three players scored in double figures to power Greensburg Central Catholic to a 71-41 victory over Monessen in a non-section game.

Anna Eisamen and Melina Maetta each scored 18 points and Bella Skatell chipped in with 17 points for GC Catholic (19-3).

Monessen (7-15) was sparked by Qitarah Hardison, who scored 16 points, and Kendelle Weston, who finished with 12 points.

In other games: Section 2-AA co-champion Serra Catholic was a 70-33 winner over Mapletown and Quigley Catholic edged Fort Cherry 33-28.

Boys results

Chartiers-Houston 47, Fort Cherry 46: Evan Simpson made two free throws with six seconds remaining to give Chartiers-Houston a 47-46 victory in a nonsection game on the Bucs’ home court.

The game was tight throughout as it was tied 29-29 at halftime and 37-37 after three quarters.

Fort Cherry (5-17) held a 46-45 lead when Simpson went the free-throw line for his pivotal foul shots.

Austin Arnold led C-H (11-11) in scoring with 14 points. Noah Loughran had 11 and Hayden Shober finished with 10.

Fort Cherry’s Noah Babirad scored a game-high 17 points and Maddox Truschel contributed 11.

McGuffey 54, Brentwood 45: C.J. Cole had a double-double to help McGuffey dispose of Brentwood, 54-45 in a non-section game.

Cole scored a game-high 28 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for McGuffey (15-7), which led 25-13 at halftime. Colin Walters added 10 points.

C.J. Ziegler had a team-high 18 points and Zach Keib chipped in with 14 points for Brentwood (11-11).

Canon-McMillan 65, Washington 43: Luke Palma scored a game-high 20 points to spearhead Canon-McMillan’s 65-43 rout of Washington in a non-section game.

Tom Somosky pitched in with 13 points for Canon-McMillan (14-8), which held a 39-20 lead at halftime. The Big Macs have won five in a row.

Zahmere Robinson scored 8 points for Washington (13-8), which had a six-game winning streak come to an end.

Brownsville 55, California 54: The Brownsville boys ended the 2019 season on a winning note Monday night after the Falcons held off a late rally for a 55-54 non-section win at California.

The Falcons (6-16) led 13-7 after the first quarter and 28-19 at halftime. They extended the lead to 43-31 after three quarters. The playoff-bound Trojans closed the gap in the final eight minutes by outscoring Brownsville, 23-12. California (12-9) had the final possession, but was not able to convert.

The Trojans’ Malik Ramsey scored a game-high 30 points, including four 3-pointers and 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

Nick Seto led the Falcons with 20 points. Phil Pace added 14.

West Mifflin 65, Ringgold 60: Deotis Powell scored a game-high 23 points to help West Mifflin down Ringgold, 65-60, in a non-section game.

Josh Brown scored 17 points and Gary Wooten posted 13 points for West Mifflin (4-18), which outscored the Rams (13-8) by a score of 21-13 in the fourth quarter.

Four players scored all of Ringgold points. Demetrius Butler led the way with 20 points, Luke Wyvratt tossed in 16 points, Jordan Taylor added 14 points and Chris Peccon scored 10 points.

Steel Valley 64, Trinity 59: Kam Williams and Cameron Polak combined for 46 points to pace Steel Valley to a 64-59 victory over Trinity in a non-section game.

Williams scored 24 points and Polakk added 22 points for Steel Valley (14-7).

Trinity (7-15) got double fiigure scoring from Michael Koroly with 21 points, Dylan King with 10 points and Jake Hancher also with 10.

Peters Township 60, Central Valley 31: Playoff-bound Peters Township got everybody into the act and rolled to a 60-31 victory over host Central Valley in a nonsection game.

Peters Township (15-7) led 15-4 after one quarter, 31-15 at halftime and outscored the hosts 20-3 in the third quarter.

Guard Colin Cote was the only PT player to score in double figures as he finished with 12 points. The Indians had 13 different players in the scoring column.

Central valley (7-14) was led by Zack Smith’s 12 points.

Frazier 51, West Greene 49: Luke Santo scored 14 points, including five in the final minute as Frazier rallied to edge host West Greene, 51-49, in a nonsection game.

West Greene (7-14), which has qualified for the Class A playoffs, led 29-21 at halftime before Frazier tied the score at 36-36 after three quarters. The Pioneers were protecting a three-point lead with 50 seconds remaining when Santo made a game-tying three-pointer. West Greene, playing for the final shot, committed a turnover and Santo scored the game-winner on a backdoor cut and layup with six seconds remaining.

Justin Novak had 14 points and Elijah Santoro 13 for Frazier (7-14), which missed the playoffs in Class 3A.

West Greene’s Ben Jackson had a big game, finishing with a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds.

In other games: New Castle was an 81-51 winner over visiting South Fayette.
