The Pittsburgh Pirates improved their spring training record to 3-0 with a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Boston Red Sox on Monday in Bradenton, Fla.
Pittsburgh starter Jordan Lyles pitched two innings, giving up a solo home run to Bryce Brentz.
“No one’s going to stand out there and say, ‘Here’s the ball. Hit it,’ Lyles said. “It’s a give and take when you’re out there. Not giving up runs is the No. 1 goal, obviously. I know what I need to do and what I need to work on, and I’m going to find those spots where I can work on them.”
Colin Moran doubled for the Pirates and scored on Kevin Newman’s sacrifice fly in the second inning.
Pittsburgh pitcher Jesus Liranzo worked through a wild fourth inning. he didn’t allow a run despite giving up a hit and two walks and hitting two batters with pitches during his 1 2/3 innings on the mound. Four of the five outs he recorded were strikeouts. The Red Sox took a two-run lead against lefty Elvis Escobar in the sixth inning.
The Pirates’ minor leaguers engineered a three-run eighth inning to win the game. Oneil Cruz drew a bases-loaded walk, and non-roster outfielder J.B. Shuck scored the tying run on a Dylan Busby groundout. Lolo Sanchez then broke the tie with an RBI single to center.
Melky Cabrera doubled for Pittsburgh.
Top prospect Mitch Keller will start for the Pirates on Tuesday as they head to Fort Myers to play the Minnesota Twins.
