College basketball roundup: Pegram makes 8 3-pointers as Cal men roll

Brent Pegram made eight of 10 three-point shots and scored a game-high 34 points as California University’s up-and-down season was definitely on a upward trajectory Wednesday night as the Vulcans rolled to a 90-66 victory at Edinboro in a PSAC West Division game.
Cal (2-3, 4-7) made 13 of 28 three-point shots and nobody was better from behind the stripe than Pegram, who went 8-for-10. He also had five assists and four steals.
The Vulcans had four players score in double figures. Jermaine Hall Jr. and Zyan Collins each had a double-double. Hall scored 16 points to go with 10 rebounds, and Collins finished with 14 rebounds and a game-high 12 rebounds. Collins almost had a triple-double as he had eight assists. Collins MacAdams rounded out the double-digit scorers with 14 points.
The Vulcans trailed 13-4 less than six minutes into the game and Edinboro (1-4, 4-6) was still on top late in the first half at 25-22. Cal then outscored Edinboro by a 37-17 margin to take a 59-42 lead in the second half. The Vulcans stretched their lead to as many as 28 points with seven minutes remaining.
Daylon Harris was the leading scorer for Edinboro with 23 points.
Women’s result
Edinboro 99, No. 12 California 92: Michael Barnes led five Edinboro players in double figures with 23 points and the hot-shooting Fighting Scots defeated previously unbeaten California 99-92 in a PSAC West game at McComb Fieldhouse.
Edinboro (4-1, 8-2) shot a blistering 61 percent from the field and made nine of 12 three-point field goals. The Fighting Scots led 48-43 at halftime, 72-62 after three quarters and held their largest lead of the game at 16 points with eight minutes remaining.
California (4-1, 10-1), ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division II, battled back and closed to within 92-88 after a layup by Shauna Harrison with 2:07 left. However, Barnes made her only three-pointer of the game with less than one minute to play, giving Edinboro a seven-point cushion.
The Fighting Scots did a good job defensively on Cal’s Seairra Barrett, the second-leading scorer in the PSAC. Barrett made five of 11 shots and finished with 14 points. She also had a game-high nine rebounds.
Abbey Sporio and Gina Vallecorsa paced Cal with 18 points each. Jiahna Flood-Francis had 14 points and Harrison came off the bench to score 12, giving the Vulcans five players in double figures. Cal was 15 of 16 from the free-throw line.
Bridgette Shaffer and Michelle Jahn each scored 22 points for Edinboro, Jontay Walton had 17 points and eight assists, and Ciara Rosten scored 13.
