Name: Gerald Comedy, Jr.

School: Washington

Sport: Wrestling

Class: Junior

Comedy’s week: Four pins in a row accomplished what had been a rare feat for a Washington wrestler: winning a tournament title.

Comedy entered the tournament as the fourth seed at heavyweight. He pinned Ayden Klitch of Brashear in 12 seconds, then knocked off Jeremiah Nelson of Highlands by fall in 1:54. Comedy pinned Nate Homa of Elizabeth Forward in 2:46 in the semifinals before pinning second-seed Mitch Miles of Laurel in 5:03 to win the gold medal.

Comedy ran his record to 7-0, all by pins.

“It’s amazing,” said Comedy of Wash High’s rise again in wrestling. “In the past couple of years, we haven’t had any people at our matches. Now, the atmosphere is great. It’s exciting to see. I hope we make the sectional (postseason). That would be a big step for us.”

Comedy began wrestling at age 4 and competed for a couple years before stopping. He returned in junior high and has been the anchor of a surging Wash High program.

Strengths

Comedy is a Division I prospect in football as would any athletic 6-3, 280-pound talent. Northwestern, West Virginia, and Wake Forest have shown early interest.

Comedy has literally and figuratively grown into a top-flight athlete. From his freshman to sophomore year, he grew three inches and added 60 pounds.

He also is a dedicated participant in the weight training program and that has helped transform his body. He benches around 300 pounds, and squats around 450 pounds.

“Breakfast is my biggest meal,” said Comedy, who also is a thrower on the track team. “I usually have pancakes, eggs, bacon occasionally, a mixture of that.”

Comedy patterns his game after one of the top players at the position he wants to play: Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey.

“He’s one of the best players in the league,” Comedy said. “That’s the position I want to play in college. That’s the position my dad played and where I started so it just stuck.”

Comedy, an honor roll student, hopes to use football to reach his life’s work goal.

“I want to go into physical therapy,” Comedy said. “Possibly a doctorate in physical therapy.”
