Girls basketball roundup: Fourth quarter key as Wash High dealt first loss
Senior forward Ashley Norling scored a game-high 24 points and Our Lady of the Scared Heart used a big fourth quarter to deal Washington its first loss of the season, 56-41, Saturday in the Chuckie Mahoney Classic held at Burgettstown High School.
OLSH (7-3), which started the year by losing its first two games, led 26-22 at halftime before Washington forged a 36-34 edge heading into the pivotal fourth quarter. OLSH then outscored Washington (9-1) by a 22-5 margin over the final eight minutes.
Maddie Hoff supported Norling’s big game by scoring 12 points.
Randi Thomas was the only Washington player to score in double figures. She had 11 points.
South Side Beaver 51, McGuffey 43: The middle quarters proved to be the difference as South Side Beaver defeated McGuffey 51-43 in the Chuckie Mahoney Classic held at Burgettstown.
South Side Beaver (8-3) was outscored 24-14 over the first and fourth quarters but the Rams won the middle quarters by a 37-19 margin. SSB outscored McGuffey 14-5 in the second quarter to take a 24-16 lead, then increased the gap to 47-30 after three quarters.
Sydney Payne led three players ind double figures for SSB with a game-high 17 points. Lex Konopko had 13 points and Alexis Chiccarello 11.
McGuffey (4-7) was led in scoring by Cassie Darrall’s 14 points.
Avella 45, Chartiers-Houston 38: Avella moved to 7-3 with a 45-38 victory over Chartiers-Houston at the Mahoney Classic in Burgettstown.
Breanna Jenkins scored 11 points for the Eagles, who led 24-21 at halftime and 37-29 after three quarters.
Zamierah Edwards scored 10 points for the Bucs (4-7). The two teams were a combined 29 of 59 from the free throw line.
