High school basketball roundup: Carmichaels edges Waynesburg, again

Carmichaels used balanced scoring and big third quarter to defeat Waynesburg for the second time in two weeks, 29-24, in a nonsection game Wednesday night on the Mikes’ home court.

Carmichaels (4-9) trailed 15-14 at halftime, then outscored the Raiders 10-3 in the pivotal third quarter. The Mikes received four points in the quarter from Gina Ranieri.

Emma Hyatt was the only Carmichaels player to score in double figures. She finished with 10 points. The Mikes had a two-point win over Waynesburg last month in the finals of the Carmichaels tournament.

Jules Fowler had a game-high 13 points for Waynesburg (4-7). Claire Paige Miller followed with 10 points. The Raiders had only three players crack the scoring column.

Frazier 64, Monessen 36: Brooke Poling and Sierra Twigg combined for 43 points and Frazier defeated host Monessen 64-36.

Frazier (7-5) has won three in a row. Monessen dropped to 1-10.

Poling led the Commodores in scoring with 22 points and Twigg was right behind with 21 and helped Frazier build a 27-16 halftime lead.

Mercedes Major paced Monessen with 10 points.

Geibel Catholic 35, Bentworth 31: Geibel Catholic won its first game of the season, 35-21, over host Bentworth in a nonsection game.

Thomas Jefferson 74, Belle Vernon 44: Thomas Jefferson bounced back from a lopsided loss to Trinity on Tuesday night to score 29 points in the third quarter against Belle Vernon and pull away for a 74-44 victory over the Leopards in a nonsection game.

TJ (6-6) led 27-20 at halftime, then erupted for a 29-14 edge in the third quarter.

Isaac McNeil’s 14 points led a balanced offense by the Jaguars. Shane Stump followed with 13 and Jake Pugh had 12.

Mitchell Pohlot had a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds for Belle Vernon (2-11). Cam Nusser also also scored 12 points and Larry Callaway had 10.
