High school basketball roundup: Wash High stops McGuffey, moves into tie for first place

Washington moved into a tie with Charleroi for first place in Class 3A Section 4 with a hard-fought 51-42 victory over host McGuffey on Tuesday night.

Washington matches Charleroi at 5-1 in the section. The Prexies (6-6 overall) will play at Charleroi on Friday night with the winner taking over sole possession of first place. McGuffey slips to 4-2 in the section and 9-6 overall.

After a 7-7 standoff in the first quarter, Washington pulled away over the next eight minutes for a 25-14 halftime lead. McGuffey trimmed the gap to 34-30 after three quarters but Wash High outscored the home team 17-12 in the fourth quarter.

Zahmere Robinson led a balanced Wash High attack with 12 points. Ian Bredniak and Dan Ethridge each contributed 11 points. Bredniak and Ethridge each had six points during the pivotal second quarter.

Nate Witkowsky was McGuffey’s leading scorer with 14 points. Washington did a good job defensively against the Highlanders’ high-scoring C.J. Cole, who was held to 12 points, including five in the first half. Colin Walters, with 10 points, also scored in double figures for McGuffey.

Trinity 48, South Fayette 40: Dylan King scored 16 points to help Trinity stop South Fayette, 48-40, in a Section 2 game in Class 5A.

Michael Koroly chipped in with 10 points for Trinity (4-2, 7-6), which led 24-18 at halftime. Trinity has won seven of its last nine games.

Connor Misian had a game-high 23 points for South Fayette (3-4, 7-6).

Ringgold 56, South Park 49: Chris Peccon scored 16 points and Ringgold snapped South Park’s four-game winning streak with a 56-49 victory in a Section 3 game in Class 4A.

The Rams (4-1, 11-3) got 10 points and nine rebounds from Luke Wyvratt. Ben Lawrence also grabbed nine rebounds. Ringgold won its second straight game after losing two.

Santino Tutich led South Park (3-2, 5-7) with 15 points. Hunter Lindsay added 13 and Aidan Rongaus 10.

Chartiers-Houston 59, Carmichaels 34: Anthony Tomassetti scored 24 points, which included four three-point field goals in the first quarter, and Chartiers-Houston defeated visiting Carmichaels 59-35 in Class 2A Section 2.

The win moves Chartiers-Houston (3-3, 8-7) ahead of Carmichaels (2-4, 8-6) in the standings and Tomassetti, a senior guard, had much to do with that. His long-range shooting sent C-H to a 19-14 lead after one quarter, which was stretched to 33-22 at halftime.

Dylan Wilson led Carmichaels in scoring with 12 points and Drake Long had 10.

Belle Vernon 77, Elizabeth Forward 48: Belle Vernon broke a six-game losing streak by scoring 49 second-half points and thumping visiting Elizabeth Forward 77-48 in Class 4A Section 3.

Belle Vernon (1-4, 3-12) led by only 28-24 at halftime but outscored EF (1-4, 5-9) by a 49-24 margin in the second half.

The trio of Mitchell Pohlot, Cam Nusser and Larry Callaway did much of the damage for the Leopards. Pohlot had a double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds, Nusser scored a game-high 23 points and Callaway also had a double-double, 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Pat Filson’s 14 points was top for the Warriors.

California 89, Bentworth 31: Malik Ramsey scored 24 points and California won its third in a row, 89-31 over Bentworth, in Class 2A Section 2.

The surging Trojans (4-2, 8-3) scored 50 points in the first half and 78 through three quarters.

Cochise Ryan had 16 points for California, Kwandre Porter came off the bench to score 12 points and Austin Grillo had 10.

Mike Vittone was the leading scorer for Bentworth (0-6, 0-13) with 12 points.

Bishop Canevin 71, Avella 40: Dahvie Montgomery scored 20 points and Bishop Canevin roared back from a first-quarter deficit to beat visiting Avella, 71-40 in Section 2-A.

Avella (2-4, 3-10) led 15-14 after one quarter but Bishop Canevin (5-1, 9-5) took a 32-24 lead into halftime and then limited the Eagles to 16 points in the second half.

Dom Elliott scored 13 points for the Crusaders and Aiden Logan had 11.

Owen Engligh’s 17 points was tops for Avella.

West Greene 71, Jefferson-Morgan 40: Nathan Brudnock led three West Greene players in double figures with 15 points and the Pioneers rolled to a 71-40 victory over host Jefferson-Morgan in Section 2-A.

West Greene, which has won three of its last four, evened its record at 3-3 in the section and moved closer to the .500 mark overall at 5-7.

Brudnock was followed in double figures by Austin Crouse with 14 points and Gavin Scott with 11. The Pioneers led by only 22-19 at halftime but pushed the gap to 48-28 after three quarters.

Tahj Jacobs led Jefferson-Morgan (2-4, 3-11) in scoring with 13 points.

SS Beaver 60, Burgettstown 52: Logan English poured in 19 points to lead South Side Beaver to a 60-52 victory over Burgettstown in a Section 3-AA game.

Brandon Barber tossed in 15 points, Nate Statler had 11 points and Jake McDougal 10 for SS Beaver (4-2, 10-4), which led 27-25 at halftime and 41-34 after three quarters.

Cole Shergi contributed a career-high 19 points and Dante Gianfrancesco added 10 points for Burgettstown (1-5, 6-8).

Uniontown 81, Waynesburg 47: Uniontown erupted for 35 points in the first quarter on the way to an 81-47 victory over Waynesburg in a Section 3 game in Class 4A.

Billy DeShields had a game-high 25 points for Uniontown (5-0, 9-3), which led 35-10 after one and 53-25 at halftime. Andre Ash and Ray Robinson each had 12 points and Isiah Melvin scored 10 points.

Waynesburg (1-4, 6-8) was paced by Lucas Garber’s 17 points.

Beth-Center 67, Brownsville 58: J.J. Green had a double-double to power Beth-Center to a 67-58 victory over Brownsville in a Section 4 game in Class 3A.

Green scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for Beth-Center (1-5, 5-7). Easton McDaniel tossed in a game-high 21 points and Andrew Bauer dropped in 15 points.

Brownsville (0-6, 3-10) had three players in double figures: Nick Seto with 20 points, Hunter Assad with 17 points and Phil Pace with 12.

Monessen 100, Mapletown 18: Monessen defeated Mapletown, 100-18, in a Section 2-A game.

The Greyhounds (6-0, 7-5) had five players in double figures. Elijahwa Payne scored 16 points, Dishon Howell had 15 points, Darnel Howell 14, Marquell Smith 12, and Dawayne Howell 10.

Mapletown fell to 0-6 and 0-13.

Girls results

Waynesburg 21, Chartiers-Houston 15: Clara Paige Miller had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds as Waynesburg defeated visiting Chartiers-Houston 21-15 in a nonsection game.

Waynesburg (5-9) led 13-9 at halftime before C-H closed to within 15-14 after three quarters. The Raiders held Chartiers-Houston (5-9) without a field goal in the fourth quarter.

No Chartiers-Houston player scored more than four points.

Burgettstown 49, Fort Cherry 28: Avery Havelka and Celeste DelVecchio combined for 25 points and Burgettstown defeated host Fort Cherry 49-28 in a Class 2A Section 3 game that was played Monday night.

The win leaves Burgettstown (3-3, 6-8), Fort Cherry (3-3, 5-8) and Chartiers-Houston tied for third place in the section.

Havelka scored a game-high 14 points and DelVecchio followed in the scoring column with 11. Abby Cooper was the leading scorer for FC with nine points.
