High school basketball roundup: Waynesburg rallies to beat Charleroi

With his team trailing by six points entering the fourth quarter Wednesday night, Lucas Garber rallied Waynesburg for a 53-47 comeback victory over Charleroi in a nonsection game to snap a six-game losing streak.

Garber scored 10 points in the final eight minutes as Waynesburg (7-8) outscored the Cougars 22-10 in the fourth quarter. Garber scored a game-high 21 points. He was the only player for the Raiders to score in double figures.

Charleroi (8-6), which saw its four-game winning streak come to an end, was paced by 17 points from Lee Zanardini. Joe Caruso also scored 12 points.

The Cougars will try to bounce back when they host Washington Friday night for first place in Class 3A Section 4. Charleroi defeated the Prexies, 60-46, when they played Dec. 14.

California 75, Beth-Center 64: Malik Ramsey scored 21 of his game-high 34 points in the second and third quarters to help California pull away from Beth-Center, 75-64, in a non-section game.

The Trojans built their lead in first half, using Ramsey’s 16 points to take a 30-19 advantage into halftime. Cochise Ryan and Austin Grillo provided a spark in the second half for California with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

It was the fourth consecutive win for California (9-3).

Beth-Center, which has lost four of its last five, falls to 5-8 overall. J.J. Green and Andrew Bower each scored 20 points for the Bulldogs. Easton McDaniel finished with 16 points.

Hundred, W.Va 73, Mapletown 40: Travis McCoy scored 29 points as Hundred, W.Va, cruised to a 73-40 win over Mapletown.

Hundred controlled play from the start, leading 26-12 after the first quarter and 45-19 at halftime. Andrews Zedell scored 19 points for Hundred.

Mapletown (0-14) was led by Lance Stevenson, who was the only player to score in double figures for the Maples with 11 points.

Girls results

Monessen 49, Propel Andrew Street 34: Monessen dominated the middle two quarters and defeated visiting Propel Andrew Street 49-34 in a nonsection game.

Monessen (4-10) extended its winning streak to three games and had to come from behind in the process. The Greyhounds trailed 16-10 after the first quarter but outscored Propel Andrew Street (3-10) by a 31-8 margin over the second and third quarters.

It is the first time since 2014 that Monessen has won three consecutive games.

Sydney Caterino and Qitarah Hardison each scored 12 points to lead the Greyhounds and Kendelle Weston had 10.

Keeley Brockington had a game-high 14 points for Propel Andrew Street.

Mapletown 37, Carmichaels 19: Taylor Dusenberry led all scorers with 14 points as Mapletown defeated Carmichaels, 37-19, in a non-section game.

The Maples, who improve to 6-7 overall, took a 9-1 lead after the first quarter and led 24-9 at halftime. Abby Antill provided secondary scoring with eight points.

The victory ended Mapletown’s 20-game losing streak against Carmichaels, a skid that dated back to 2007.

Carmichaels (5-11) was led by Shelby McCann’s five points.
