Small college basketball roundup: Yellow Jackets tripped at the line
Isaac Williams and Nate Peters each scored 14 points and Grove City used some clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch to beat visiting Waynesburg 71-63 Friday night in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference men’s basketball game.
Waynesburg used a three-point field goal by Brennan Smith, who scored 13 points, to cut Grove City’s lead to 60-59 with 1:57 remaining. Peters answered with a three-pointer and the Wolverines (5-4, 9-7) then sealed the victory from the free-throw line, making eight foul shots in the final 64 seconds. For the game, Grove City made 28 of 37 free throws.
The game was close throughout as neither team led by more than eight points. Grove City was up 37-35 at halftime.
Jake Dougherty led Waynesburg (3-6, 4-13) in scoring with a game-high 21 points that included five of the Yellow Jackets’ eight three-point field goals. Frank Bozicevic had 12 points. Waynesburg has lost four in a row.
Women’s results
Grove City 70, Waynesburg 65: Grove City shot it better from three-point range than Waynesburg did and that was the difference as the Wolverines edged the Yellow Jackets 70-65 in a PAC game.
Grove City (5-4, 9-7) made 8 of 28 shots from three-point range while Waynesburg 4-for-20 from behind the stripe.
The game was close throughout as Grove City led 30-29 at halftime and 51-46 after three quarters. The Wolverines pulled out to a 65-56 lead with only 39 seconds remaining, then held to hold off late flurry by Waynesburg as the Yellow Jackets closed to within three points with six seconds left.
Jess Bowen led Grove City in scoring with 17 points, Kate Balcom had 16 and McKenzie Black 12.
Wayensburg’s Andrea Orlosky scored a game-high 21 points. Monica Starre had 14 points, Julie DeKlaven scored 13 points and Brooke Fuller had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
