West Greene to honor 93-94 wrestling team

The West Greene Athletic Department will be inducting the 1993-94 varsity wrestling team into its Hall of Fame today. The Pioneers will be hosting South Allegheny in a 7 p.m. match, and the Hall of Fame ceremony will take place prior to the match.

The 1993-94 team finished 17-0 overall, 9-0 in Section 3-AA, and won the WPIAL Team Tournament title.

Little League recognition, and Senior Night festivities will also be held today. Varsity wrestling coach Garett Johnston also will be organizing a “Welcome Back All-Alumni” session for a meet the team social following the match.

Former Cal softball player on Canadian National Team

Former California University standout Natalie Wideman was recently named to the Canadian National Team 24-player roster.

The Canadian National Team will be playing as the Canadian Wild in the National Pro Fastpitch with play in the six-team league beginning in late May. The Canadian Wild will play their home games this summer in Marion, Ill., at Rent One Park, which also hosts the Southern Illinois Miners of the Frontier League.

The Canadian National Team will use the 25-game NPF schedule to prepare for the 2019 Olympic Qualifier, 2019 Pan American Games and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The 2019 Pan American Games will be held in Peru from July 26-Aug. 11, while the Americas Olympic Softball Qualifier will be hosted from Aug. 25-Sept. 1 in Surrey, British Columbia. The Canadian National Team will make a final cut to 15 players in the winter for the 2020 Summer Olympics. 

Wideman was a four-year starter at catcher and second base for the Vulcans from 2011-14. As a senior, she was named the Diamond Sports NCAA Division II Catcher of the Year and helped the Vulcans capture their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship since 2000.

A native of Ontario, Wideman collected 200 hits in her career and sits among the top 10 all-time in school history with a .377 average, 155 runs scored and 30 stolen bases. She was a three-time All-PSAC West First-Team selection and was voted the PSAC West Athlete of the Year as a senior when she led the league in average, runs scored and on-base percentage.
