Three is more than two.

That simple math played in favor of Chatham University’s women’s basketball team as 17 of the 20 shots made by the Cougars were three-pointers as they defeated Washington & Jefferson 72-70 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game Saturday at Henry Memorial Center.

The loss for W&J (9-2, 13-6) ends a 11-game winning streak. It was the first time the Presidents lost since Nov. 28 against Saint Vincent, which takes over sole possession of first place.

Chatham (6-5, 10-10) went 17-for-44 from behind the arc, and four players made at least three three-pointers. Katie Sieg and Kaitlyn Fertig each made five thress. Sieg scored a game-high 25 points.

Trailing 41-38 at halftime, W&J retook the lead in the middle of the third quarter with an eight-point run. That advantage was slowly lost down the stretch as the Presidents were outscored 19-14 in the final quarter, most of those points for the Cougars coming from the foul line.

Maria Lawhorne led the Presidents with 20 points. Allie Seto was the only other player in doubel figures for W&J, which only went 3-for-20 from behind the arc, with 15 points.

California 62, Mercyhurst 56: Seairra Barrett did a little bit of everything with 31 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and three assists to lead California over Mercyhurst, 62-56, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division game.

Gina Vallecorsa was the only other player to reach double figures for California with 10 points.

Eliza Oswalt led upset-minded Mercyhurst (5-7, 8-11) with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
