W&J finishes

ranked 7th

After advancing to the Division III College World Series for just the second time in school history, the Washington & Jefferson College baseball team concluded the 2019 season ranked inside the Top 10 of both of the final national Division III polls.

W&J was ranked No. 6 in the final D3baseball.com Top 25 poll while earning the No. 7 ranking in the season-ending ABCA/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 30.

The Presidents jumped up to the No. 6 spot in the D3baseball.com Top 25 released Saturday. W&J was not ranked inside the Top 25 at any point during the 2019 season. The Presidents were among the others receiving votes portion of the poll throughout the month of April.

At The Meadows

Parked through a grueling 26.4 opening panel, Cue Hall found more in the lane and captured Monday’s $20,000 Open Handicap Trot at The Meadows.

As if that demanding start weren’t enough, Cue Hall had to withstand an extended uncovered challenge from heavy favorite Bluebird Jesse, who had won four of his last five. Nevertheless, the 7-year-old son of Andover Hall-Curli Cue was up to the task, holding off the rallying She Nuit by ½ length to score for Mike Wilder in 1:54.2. Tequila Talkin shot the Lightning Lane for show.

Rich Gillock trains Cue Hall, who now boasts $452,489 in career earnings, for owner/breeder Bob Key.

Dave Palone and Wilder each collected three wins on the 13-race card.

Cal player honored

California University sophomore Sara Suazo repeated as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Athlete of the Year and newcomer Rachel Wilson was selected the PSAC Freshman of the Year on Monday afternoon.

Suazo becomes only the third golfer in league history – all from Cal U – to earn Athlete of the Year laurels in consecutive seasons. She was also tabbed to the All-PSAC First-Team on Monday after leading the team with a scoring average of 78.6 strokes, which is over a one-stroke improvement from last year.

Suazo was the team’s top golfer in every event this season and finished among the top three on the individual leader board seven times. The New York native won medalist honors three times this year and has now won six tournaments in her career. Suazo finished in third place at the PSAC Championships in the fall and closed the spring season by qualifying as an individual for the NCAA East Super Region Championships for the second-straight year.

In the majors

Charlie Morton remained unbeaten with Tampa Bay, pitching seven shutout innings en route to a 6-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

Brandon Lowe homered for the third time in two days, snapping a scoreless tie in the sixth inning and helping the Rays take over sole possession of the first place in the AL East with their sixth victory in seven games.

  • Michael Wacha pitched six scoreless innings in his return to the St. Louis Cardinals’ rotation, and they broke a three-game losing streak by beating Miami 4-1.

Wacha, who was briefly demoted to the bullpen, benefited from three double plays and a pickoff in his first start since May 22. The former All-Star allowed five hits, struck out four and lowered his ERA to 5.63.
