MARION, Ill. – Former Washington pitcher Chase Cunningham shined against his former team, leading Southern Illinois to a 3-2 victory over the Wild Things in a Frontier League game Wednesday night at Rent One Park.

Cunningham, who had spent three years with the Wild Things, went seven strong innings, struck out nine and allowed only four hits.

Washington had its losing streak extended to five games. Its last three losses have all been by one run.

Arturo Nieto broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run to give Southern Illinois a 1-0 lead in the third inning. The Miners added a pair of runs in the fifth.

Mikael Mogues spoiled Cunningham’s shutout with a two-run homer in the seventh inning, cutting the Wild Things’ deficit to 3-2.

Washington had runners at the corners in the ninth but Southern Illinois reliever Jordan Brink struck out Cody Erikson to secure the victory.
