Baseball MVP – Eric Chalus
Pitching in Class 6A, especially rugged Section 3, is difficult for any sophomore but Bethel Park’s Eric Chalus made it look easy. A prototypical crafty lefthander, Chalus pitched Bethel Park to the section title, the WPIAL semifinals and a 15-5 record. Chalus had a 5-0 record in the regular season and led all Class 6A pitchers with a sterling 1.12 ERA and 57 strikeouts. In his first outing of the season, Chalus allowed one unearned run and beat eventual WPIAL champion Pine-Richland, 2-1. He had four key wins in five outings during section play and was the winning pitcher in the Black Hawks’ victory over Seneca Valley in the WPIAL playoffs. In the district’s third-place game against North Allegheny, Chalus gave up three runs on three hits in the first inning, then pitched no-hit ball the rest of the way with 14 strikeouts in a 3-0 loss.
