The girls basketball season for Peters Township was dominant from start to finish. And the Indians have two gold medals to show for it and made history doing so. Completing a perfect season (30-0) with a 62-49 win over Garnet Valley in the PIAA Class 6A Championship at the Giant Center in Hershey, Peters Township became the fifth team in WPIAL history to win a state title with an undefeated record. It was the first state title in program history, which came a few short weeks after a thrilling overtime win over North Allegheny, 43-40, in the WPIAL Class 6A title game. In Peters Township’s 30 wins, 26 came by double-digit points. Welcoming newcomers in freshman Journey Thompson and junior Mackenzie Lehman, who both played vital roles in the run, the Indians were led by senior guards Makenna Marisa and Isabella Mills. Marisa averaged 20.8 points and Mills 13.8 points in their final seasons. “It was a real exercise of staying focused and not looking ahead,” said Peters Township coach Bert Kendall. “The accumulation of those events and wins was remarkable.” The Indians were the fourth Washington County girls basketball team to win a district championship. They were the first in county history to finish a regular season unbeaten and win a state title.
