Girls Soccer MVP – Landy Mertz
Landy Mertz is the All-American Girl. A National Honor Society member and highest-honor student while at Upper St. Clair High School, she dominated on the soccer field, earning United Soccer Coaches All-America acclaim in 2018. She also was a four-time all-section all-star as well as a two-time all-state and all-WPIAL selection. Mertz burst onto the scene as a freshman, scoring 13 goals and helping the Panthers to a 20-2-1 record complete with an undefeated section title and a PIAA trophy. She was named her school’s, as well as The Almanac’s, Rookie of the Year. Though slowed by an injury that interrupted her junior season, Mertz finished with career 56 goals and 30 assists, including 20 tallies and 15 assists during her senior year, which produced a 13-4 team record complete with an appearance in the WPIAL semifinals, where the Panthers fell to eventual champion Seneca Valley. The pint-sized Mertz – she stands only 5-4 – also excelled at the Rivershound Academy and for Century United, leading her team to three state cups and two regional championships. Her squads won the 2018 Region I title as well as a national championship. Mertz was named Best 11 at the USYSA National Championships in 2018. Mertz will continue her education at Dayton and play soccer in the Atlantic 10 Conference for the Flyers.
