Girls Tennis MVP – Mia Gorman
Mia Gorman proved a fast learner in her first season of varsity tennis. That’s not so surprising, though, because she picked up a racket when she was only three. Last fall, while playing for Bethel Park High School, Gorman demonstrated why she was ranked No. 6 among all freshmen in the state. After earning the No. 1 singles slot on the Hawks’ team, she advanced all the way to the PIAA tournament and moved into position to become the school’s most-recent singles champion by the time she graduates. She still has three years left to win a WPIAL title. BP’s last district winner was Kellie Schmitt in 2002. In 2018, Gorman came close. She took third. After opening district tournament action with a 10-2 win against Regan Sommariva, Gorman upset fourth-seeded Jenn Bell from Latrobe in the quarterfinals. She lost in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, to eventual champion Ashley Huang from North Allegheny in the semifinals. Gorman rebounded to beat Amelia Haley of Mars, 6-3, 6-2, in the consolation contest and grabbed a spot in the PIAA tournament held at the Hershey Racket Club. Gorman was the Section 3 runner-up. She lost a three-setter, 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, in the championship match to Baldwin’s Bethany Yauch, who battled Huang for the WPIAL title.
