W&J lacrosse loses
The Washington & Jefferson women’s lacrosse team came back from a five-goal deficit in the second half against Medaille Sunday but were bested in the final seconds in an 8-7 road loss.
The Presidents are 0-2 on the season, dropping games on back-to-back days. The Mavericks, on the other hand, are 2-0.
Leading 4-2 after the half, Medaille added to its advantage by scoring the first three goals of the second stanza.
Trailing 7-2 with 25:54 left in the game, the Presidents needed a spark to get back into contention. Rae LaRochelle sparked the push by scoring her third goal of the day at the 25:30 mark of the second.
That score was the first of five straight for the Presidents, who tied the score at 7-7 with just over a minute left in the game. W&J had thought they tied the score seven minutes earlier when Sofiya Bobrovnikova found the back of the net with 8:17 left, but the goal was waved off due to a stick violation.
W&J’s comeback attempt came to a close with just 21 seconds remaining, when the Mavericks scored on a free-position attempt to steal an 8-7 victory.
In the NBA
Bobby Portis had 26 points and 12 rebounds and the Washington Wizards beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 135-121 Sunday night. Bradley Beal and reserve Jabari Parker each scored 22 points for Washington, which had lost five of six. Karl-Anthony Towns led the Timberwolves with 28 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
- James Harden had 42 points before fouling out late in the fourth quarter and the Houston Rockets held on to beat the Boston Celtics 115-104 for their fifth straight victory. Harden made six 3-pointers and scored 40 or more points for the 24th time this season.
Alex Len scored a season-high 28 points and the Atlanta Hawks held on to beat the Chicago Bulls 123-118. Len finished three points shy of his personal-best. He also made a personal-best five 3-pointers. Trae Young scored 18 before getting ejected early in the third quarter for taunting Chicago’s Kris Dunn. And the Hawks got some payback for a 168-161 quadruple overtime loss at home two nights earlier.
- Rookie Landry Shamet scored 21 points, Danilo Gallinari added 20 and the Los Angeles Clippers routed the Knicks 128-107, sending New York to its 50th loss of the season. Shamet and Gallinari combined for 27 of the Clippers’ 38 points in the first quarter when they raced to a 38-20 lead and never looked back.
Pitt women fall
Louisville used its stout defense to secure at least a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference title for the second consecutive season.
Asia Durr scored 17 points, and the third-ranked Cardinals shut down Pitt for a 67-40 victory Sunday.
Jazmine Jones added 12 points for Louisville (27-2, 14-2), which earned its fourth straight victory. Sam Fuehring had 10 points and six rebounds.
The Cardinals held the Panthers to 32.7 shooting from the field. They also forced 25 Pittsburgh turnovers.
“We got some great shots in the first half, the ball just didn’t go in,” Louisville coach Jeff Walz said. “Instead of getting emotional because we missed shots, we continued to defend. That’s what’s really exciting to me. … You’ve got to find a way to win some games when the ball’s not going in.”
Louisville pulled away from Pitt with a big second quarter. The Cardinals outscored the Panthers 17-5 in the period for a 32-18 lead at the break.
With Pitt’s zone defense focused on Durr, who entered averaging 21.6 points per game, Jones went 6 for 9 from the floor.
