Cal women in D-II basketball tournament
The California University women’s basketball team is returning to the NCAA Division II tournament, which begins Friday. The Vulcans received an at-large berth Sunday night.
Cal (24-5) will play in the eight-team Atlantic Regional, which will be host by top-seeded and Mountain East Conference champion Glenville State (29-2). California is seeded fourth in the region and will play fifth-seeded Charleston (W.Va.) in the opening round.
Charleston (25-6) lost in the Mountain East championship game to Glenville State. Cal played Charleston in the Mountain East/PSAC Challenge back in mid-November at the Convocation Center with the Vulcans winning 70-53.
The Cal-Charleston winner will face either Glenville State or West Liberty (21-9) in the regional semifinals.
On the other side of the regional bracket, second-seeded Virginia Union (27-2) will play seventh-seeded Edinboro (20-8), which owns two wins over California. PSAC tournament champion and third-seeded Indiana (26-3) plays sixth-seeded Bowie State (22-5). Two of IUP’s three losses have come against California.
