College baseball

The California University baseball team suffered its first shutout of the season, falling by a 3-0 margin to Ohio Dominican on Tuesday afternoon at Fleming Stadium.

The Vulcans saw their seven-game winning streak snapped and fell to 10-2 overall. The Panthers improved to 6-7.

Freshman Tyler Bedillion recorded a no-decision after tossing six scoreless innings in his first career start. He allowed four hits with four strikeouts after closing out the game yesterday versus Kutztown.

Freshman Jacob McCaskey was saddled with the loss after surrendering two runs, all earned, on one hit with three walks in 2.1 innings. Ohio Dominican sophomore Tim Zeller earned the win, working three scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Panther freshman Joel Roediger also took a no-decision after allowing zero runs on four hits with seven strikeouts over six innings.

  • The Washington & Jefferson baseball team had chances to beat Salve Regina on Tuesday in nonconference play during their spring trip to Florida, but the Presidents were unable to capitalize in a 3-1 setback.

W&J is now 3-3, while the Seagulls are 3-4. For the second consecutive game, the Presidents struggled to put runs on the board, as they were limited to just one run for the second straight day. This lack of run production was not fueled by lack of hitting, however, as W&J scored a season-best 11 hits to Salve’s 12.

College softball

Defensive struggles hindered the Washington & Jefferson softball team as the Presidents dropped a pair of games Tuesday afternoon at the PFX Spring Games in Florida.

In a 12-5 loss to Sage College, the Presidents committed seven errors that led to nine unearned runs for Sage. Ultimately, that was too much to overcome as Sage built an early 8-0 lead over W&J.

The Presidents tried to battle back, scoring three runs on three hits in the third inning. Taylor Andres ripped a double to bring home a pair. The Presidents then tacked on another run when Sarah Labbe reached on an error, cutting the deficit to 8-3.

Brooke Lapia launched the first home run of the season for W&J, a solo shot in the sixth to bring the score to 8-4. However, Sage tacked on three more unearned runs in the seventh to pull away.

In a 9-5 loss to Newbury, W&J stranded 14 baserunners.

Newbury scored five unearned runs in the second inning, including a grand slam. The Presidents answered with three runs in the top of the fourth, as Labbe tripled home Brooklynn Miller and Brooke Shuck and Dana Parker added an RBI single to score Labbe, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

Newbury countered back with four unanswered runs to push its lead to 9-3.

College lacrosse

The Washington & Jefferson women’s lacrosse team suffered a 10-9 overtime loss to Lasell on Tuesday afternoon in Newtown, Mass.

With the loss, the Presidents are 1-4. The Lasers are 2-1.

Junior attacker Rae LaRochelle continued her hot start to the year by leading the Presidents with four goals. The East Sandwich, Mass. native paces the team through five games with 18 points and 15 goals. She has scored multiple goals in all but one game in 2019.
