LEWISBURG – It was a landmark Thursday night for Belle Vernon’s swimming program as Leopards won a pair of gold medals at the PIAA Class AA Championships.

Ian Shahan started the big night by winning his second gold in as many days by winning the 100-yard freestyle. Shahan, who won the 100 butterfly Wednesday night in the first day of the state meet, doubled his medal total by touching the wall first, in 45.39, beating runner-up Josiah Lauver of Bishop McDevitt by .11.

Later, Belle Vernon’s Robert Spekis won Belle Vernon’s second gold medal of the night and third of the championships by beating the competition in the 100 breaststroke. Spekis, who had the second-fastest time in the preliminaries, had a winning time of 56.63, edging second-place Andrew Iannacone of Holy Ghost Prep by .35.

Spekis won bronze in the 200 individual medley on Wednesday.
