College lacrosse

Twelve different players scored as the Washington & Jefferson College men’s lacrosse team rolled to a 22-6 victory over Wilmington College in non-conference play at Alexandre Stadium.

The win was the third straight for the Presidents, who improved to 4-4 overall. The loss dropped the visiting Quakers to 1-4 overall.

Benjamin Ward, a Canon-McMillan graduate, and Alex Strain paced the Presidents with five points apiece. Ward had four goals and an assist, and Strain registered a pair of goals and four assists.

Brendan Tribeck and Mark Mandak added four-point performances as the Presidents scored a season-high 22 goals against the Quakers.

  • The Waynesburg University women’s lacrosse team fell to NAIA member Concordia (Mich.) 23-0 at John F. Wiley Stadium on Saturday.

Freshman Grace Zablosky led Waynesburg with four groundballs. Freshman goalkeeper Riley Yoder made 10 saves.

Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday, hosting West Virginia Wesleyan. Start time is at 5 p.m.

Manziel joins AAF

Johnny Manziel has been signed by the Alliance of American Football and will join the Memphis Express.

The quarterback’s rights belonged to San Antonio of the spring league, but that team declined to sign him and Manziel then was free to join any of the other seven clubs.

The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner at Texas A&M had his contract with the CFL terminated this offseason. The Canadian league said he violated his agreement with it, but has offered no specifics.

Manziel was a first-round draft pick by Cleveland, but fizzled out there. He was 2-6 as a starter with the Montreal Alouettes last season.

Cole Custer wins

Cole Custer held off Kyle Busch to win the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Auto Club Speedway. Custer prevented Busch from tying Richard Petty’s record with his 200th career victory across NASCAR’s three major series.

The 21-year-old Custer capitalized when a disastrous pit stop dropped Busch to 14th place with 33 laps to go in a race he had dominated up to that point.

College track

The Washington and Jefferson Track and Field team opened the outdoor portion of its 2019 schedule at the Washington & Lee Track and Field Carnival, which was held in Lexington, Va.

The Presidents had several strong performances at the two-day mid-March event. Most notably, those came from senior Jarrod Webb, who posted three top five finishes. Webb finished second in the hammer throw, third in the discuss and fourth in the shot put.

Ben Heim of Washington placed fifth in the 800 meters, with a time of 1:57.30. Parker Laughlin was 15th (2:02.42) and Damon Gall, a Canon-McMillan graduate, crossed the finish line in 17th (2:02.53) to provide three top 20 finishes for W&J.

Gall also finished 19th in the 5,000 meters (16:27.15) and Laughlin was 18th in the 1,500 meters (4:22.22).

On the women’s side, Hannah Lacey, a Beth-Center grad, finished fifth (2:24.33) and Faith Remich was 15th (2:30.91) in the 800 meters, respectively.

In the NBA

Kyrie Irving just missed his second straight triple-double with 30 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists, Jaylen Brown scored 23 points with a key 3-pointer and the Boston Celtics held off the Atlanta Hawks 129-120 after blowing a 25-point second-half lead.

Marcus Morris had 19 points and Jayson Tatum 18 for Boston, which has won six of eight. Trae Young led the Hawks with 26 points.
