High school softball: C-H’s Brookman no-hits Charleroi in section opener
Chartiers-Houston’s Ella Brookman had quite the game against Charleroi.
Brookman, the Bucs’ pitcher, tripled, drove in three runs and also threw a five-inning no-hitter as Chartiers-Houston won its Class 2A Section 3 opener, 10-0, at home.
Brookman struck out seven and issued only a walk to losing pitcher Kylie Quigley and hit Phoebe Wentzell with a pitch.
Belle Hess went 4-for-4 and scored three runs, and Kaci Alderson doubled and drove in two runs for C-H (1-0, 4-0).
Charleroi is 0-1 in section and 1-1 overall.
Edgewood 4, West Greene 3: Kristen Drake hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Edgewood, Ohio, a 4-3 win over two-time defending Class A champion West Greene in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Edgewood is a Class 3A team.
Kaitlyn Ezzone gave up 14 hits but the Pioneers left 11 runners on base in their first game of the season.
Jade Renner walked one and struck out eight. Kaitlyn Rizor doubled and Madison Lampe tripled.
Canon-McMillan 16, Mt. Lebanon 3: Canon-McMillan digs the long ball.
The Big Macs hit five more of them in a 16-3 win over visiting Mt. Lebanon in a five-inning Class 6A Section 1 game.
The five home runs give C-M nine in two section games as the Big Macs improved to 2-0 in the league and 3-0 overall.
Hailey Freeman belted a grand slam, doubled and drove in four for Canon-McMillan. Lindsay Schmidt smacked two home runs and finished with four RBI. Olivia Ulam homered and doubled, and Sydney Senay went 4-for-4 with a home run.
Elika Mowery was the winning pitcher. Losing pitcher Jenna Gorecki homered for Mt. Lebanon (2-1, 2-1).
West Mifflin 11, Belle Vernon 5: Emma Mackulin and Casey Bornak each drove in three runs and West Mifflin used a fast start to defeat Belle Vernon 11-5 in Class 4A Section 2.
West Mifflin (2-0, 4-0) scored four runs in each of the first two innings and led 8-0 after three innings.
Mackulin, who was 3-for-4, tripled. Alyssa Schmidt also had a triple, and Bornak and Lauren Yuhas each doubled for the Titans.
Ashley Joll was 2-for-4 with three RBI for Belle Vernon 1-10, 1-3) and Jordan French hit a triple.
Carmichaels 17, Beth-Center 2: Gina Ranieri went 4-for-4 and Kylie Sinn doubled, tripled and threw a three-hitter as Carmichaels defeated host Beth-Center 17-2 in five innings in the Class 2A Section 3 opener.
Carmichaels (1-0, 1-0) led 6-2 after four innings and scored 11 runs in the fifth.
Ranieri, who drove in three runs, led the Mikes’ 14-hit attack. Grace Brown and Emily Conklin each had a double for the Mikes and Madison Ellsworth had three RBi.
Beth-Center’s record dropped to 0-1, 1-1.
Frazier 8, Bentworth 0: Logan Hartman fired a four-hit shutout and Frazier scored seven times over the first three innings en route to an 8-0 victory over host Bentworth in the Class 2A Section 3 opener for both teams.
Hartman struck out nine and did not walk a batter. Bentworth (0-1, 1-4) was limited to four singles.
Hartman helped her cause with a double. Rylee Evans and Savannah Berklovich also doubled for the Commodores (1-0, 2-0).
Jefferson-Morgan 15, Washington 0: Maddie Vandivner belted a grand slam – one of four home runs hit by Jefferson-Morgan – as the Rockets defeated Washington 15-0 in four innings in a non-section game.
J-M (1-1) had only nine hits but five went for extra bases. Jasmine Denmaske homered and tripled, Autumn Gustovich homered and Payton Wright also hit a round-tripper.
Winning pitcher Cait Dugan threw a three-hitter and struck out four.
