College lacrosse
The Washington & Jefferson women’s lacrosse team kicked off the PAC portion of its 2019 schedule with a dominating 22-9 victory over Chatham.
The Presidents are 3-6 overall, the Cougars drop to 2-4.
W&J went into halftime with an 8-7 lead. Rae LaRochelle fueled the Presidents’ early offense, scoring four times in the first half to lead all players. Piper Schinsky had two scores in the first 30 minutes.
W&J picked up its attack in the second half, scoring 14 of the next 16 goals to pick up the double-digit victory. LaRochelle, Schinsky and Clara Sherwood each finished tied for the team lead with three goals in the second half.
LaRochelle ended the day with career highs in points (9) and goals (7). The senior attacker leads the Presidents with 37 points and 29 goals.
- The Washington & Jefferson College men’s lacrosse team suffered a 14-13 loss to visiting Chatham University in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Alexandre Stadium.
Ben Ward led all players with eight points (five goals, three assists) and added a team-high five ground balls. Pat Brunner added four goals and Alex Strain scored three points (two goals, one assist). Noah Cohen recorded 13 saves in the net.
Chatham held advantages in shots (47-37), shots on goal (27-20), ground balls (50-34) and face-off wins (20-11). W&J held a narrow 16-15 advantage in successful clears and Chatham committed 26 turnovers to 24 for W&J.
The loss dropped W&J to 5-5 overall and 0-1 in PAC play. Chatham moves to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in league games.
College baseball
Because of constant rain in the forecast, the No. 25 California University baseball team postponed its road doubleheader versus No. 13 Mercyhurst, scheduled for Saturday. The PSAC West doubleheader in Erie, , has been rescheduled for today at 1 p.m.
College softball
The California Uniiversity softball team was scheduled to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West play on Friday, with a doubleheader at Slippery Rock. Cal will now play its home doubleheader at Slippery Rock on Tuesday, April 2, at 2:30 p.m.
Cal was then set to play a twinbill at Edinboro on Saturday. However, the Vulcans will now face the Fighting Scots in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 3, at 2:30 p.m.
Additionally, the Vulcans have adjusted their home doubleheader with Gannon that was previously scheduled for Thursday, April 4, in Erie. The twinbill will now be played on April 7 with the games being played at Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, starting at 1 p.m.
Water polo
The Washington & Jefferson women’s water polo team concluded the 2019 regular season with a 22-6 loss to McKendree at the Penn State Behrend Invitational on Saturday, in Erie.
Freshman Emma Rearson scored three goals in the game to pace the Presidents.
Fellow attackers Chloe Magyari, Samantha Worobetz and Paige Adams rounded out W&J’s scorers in the game with one goal each.
3-point record
The NBA has set a record for 3-pointers made for the seventh consecutive year, after the 25,808th of the season was made Saturday night.
The league is on pace for about an 8 percent rise in 3-pointers over last season – and 3s are getting made a staggering 57 percent more often than what was the case just five years ago.
