West Greene softball

loses in final inning

West Greene dropped to 1-3 after losing to Frederick Douglass of Kentucky, 6-5, on a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 8th inning. This finishes their trip to the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Kaitlyn Rizor was 2-for-4, adding a double and 2 RBI for West Greene. Jade Renner was 2-for-4 with an RBI, and took the loss, striking out 6 and walking 3, 2 Intentional. Brianna Amos added 2 hits and scored a run, and Kylie Simms was 2-for-3, drew a walk, and drove in a run.

Kayleigh Bell picked up the win for Frederick Douglass, striking out 2 and walking 1. West Greene stranded 10 runners in the game. Kasia Porks was 2-for-3 with a triple and an inside-the-park home run for Frederick Douglass.

College baseball

Three runs in the top of the 10th inning helped the Washington & Jefferson College baseball team secure a 6-3 victory over Chatham University in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play Sunday afternoon at West Field in Munhall.

The victory gives W&J the three-game series sweep of Chatham. The win also extends the Presidents’ current winning streak to 10 games, which matches its longest winning streak since the 2017 season.

W&J opened the scoring in the top of the third inning when Dante Dalesandro singled and scored on a passed ball to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Presidents tacked on another run when Adam Shaprio used a sacrifice fly to score Justin Griffin. A successful double steal by Griffin and Spencer Howell extended the edge to 3-0 in the fifth inning.

W&J improved to 8-0 in PAC play and 13-7 overall. Chatham fell to 0-6 in league games and 3-15 overall.

College track

The California University track team registered seven victories (five individual, two relay) on Saturday to earn the team title at the Bethany Invitational.

The Cal women’s track & field team totaled 123.5 points to finish first in the team standings. West Liberty placed second with 104.5 points and West Virginia Wesleyan finished with 91 points at the 13-team event.

Junior Alicia Collier and freshman Divonne Franklin each improved their league-qualifying times in the 100-meter dash. Franklin won the finals of the event with a time of 12.24 seconds, which ranks as the fifth-best time in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference this spring. Collier placed second in the finals with a time of 12.26 seconds to improve her qualifying mark by two-hundredths of a second.

Collier also reached the conference standard in the 200-meter dash, winning the event by over eight-tenths of a second with a time of 25.30 seconds. Franklin also finished third in the 200 meters by posting a time of 26.22 seconds.

Junior Erin Meckler won the high jump while in West Virginia, clearing 1.60 meters (5-3.0 feet) on her third attempt. She ranks second in the event on the league’s performance list this spring.

Cal won both relay events with Collier and Franklin on both. The 400-meter relay of Collier, sophomore Aaliyah Lewis, Franklin and freshman Innocense Ross won by more than 1.4 seconds after posting a time of 48.34 seconds.

College golf

The California University women’s golf team placed 16th overall in the team standings at the Perry Park Spring Fling hosted by Lewis Sunday.

Cal shot a 129-over 705 (346-359) at the event held in Kentucky. Findlay captured the team title by five strokes after shooting a 33-over 609 (311-298).

Sophomore Sara Suazo led Cal and tied for 15th overall with an 11-over 155 (74-81) while in The Bluegrass State. She has finished in the top 20 in all seven events this season, claiming medalist honors three times.
