High School Roundup: Burgettstown continues to roll with walk-off win

Lexie Stratus was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to hand Burgettstown a 4-3 victory over Brentwood in a Class 2A Section 1 softball game Thursday afternoon.

Stratus was the fifth hit-batsman for Brentwood pitcher Ann Herrera, who also had four strikeouts. Her only walk came to Jordan Baronik to start the eighth inning.

The win assures at least a tie for third place for the playoff-bound Blue Devils (7-4, 8-8), who have won five of their last six games.

Madison Kozares went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Burgettstown. Aubrey Krivak struck out 13 and walked two.

Brentwood is 2-8 and 3-9.

Monessen 9, Avella 0: Kendelle Watson doubled and drove in two runs to help Monessen to a 9-0 victory over Avella in a Section 2-A game.

Madison Telegraphis also knocked in two runs for the Greyhounds (5-5, 5-8), who hold fourth place and a playoff berth from the section. Hannah Yorty struck out nine and allowed just two hits.

Brianna Jenkins doubled for Avella (0-9, 0-12).

Carmichaels 15, Charleroi 4: Carmchaels made quick work of Charleroi, scoring in four of the five innings for a 15-4 win in a Section 3-AA game.

Emily Conklin went 3-for-3 with a double for the playoff-bound Mikes (8-4, 11-5), who finished third in the section.

Jocelyn Polonoli had a double and triple for the Cougars (4-8, 6-9). Kylie Quigley added a triple.

Elizabeth Forward 5, Belle Vernon 3: Elizabeth Forward held off a late rally by Belle Vernon for a 5-3 victory in Section 2 in Class 4A.

Elizabeth Forward finished 12-0 in the section and 13-3 overall. Grace Smith had a double, single and two RBI. Taylor Ludwig singled twice. Kailey Larcinese struck out 10.

Lindsay Steeber homered, doubled and drove in two runs for BV (4-7, 6-12), which scored twice in the seventh inning.

Waynesburg 5, Keystone Oaks 3: Jordan Sibert doubled and had two RBI to help Waynesburg down Keystone Oaks, 5-3, in a Section 3 game in Class 3A

Erin Fitch had two singles for the fifth-place Raiders (4-7, 7-8). Paige Rutan had two hits and Rachel Elsenheimer doubled.

Sarah LaDonne homered for Keystone Oaks (9-3, 9-4).

Baseball

Carmichaels 10, Burgettstown 3: Dylan Wilson went 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBI to propel Carmichaels to a 10-3 victory over Burgettstown in a Section 1-AA game.

Carmichaels (8-1, 12-1) has a half-game lead over Chartiers-Houston for first place in the section but has three section games to play. Stush Ferek drove in three runs and Drake Long scored twice.

Nate Klodowski went 3-for-4 and John Baronik and Seth Arnold each hit a double for Burgettstown (2-8, 4-10).

Waynesburg 17, Washington 2: A 14-run second inning powered Waynesburg to a 17-2 victory over Washington in a three-inning Section 3 game in Class 3A.

The Raiders (6-3, 7-4) can finish no worse than fourth place in the section. Trevor Stephenson had one of three Waynesburg triples and drove in two runs. Tyler Switalski tripled and drove in three runs and Luke Robinson tripled, singled, drove in two and scored twice.

Asa Charnik and Steven Patterson doubled for Washington (0-9, 2-12).

Chartiers-Houston 10, Frazier 4: Roman Lombardi homered, doubled and drove in four runs to send Chartiers-Houston past Frazier, 10-4, in a Section 1-AA game.

Carmichaels (8-1, 12-1) has a half-game lead over Chartiers-Houston (8-2, 10-4) for first place in the section and the Bucs have two section games remaining.

Jimmy Sadler doubled, drove in three runs and scored twice for C-H. Destin Weiser went 2-for-3 and scored three times.

Nate Stefancik drove in two runs for Frazier (3-7, 6-8).

West Greene 26, Clay-Battelle 5: Scoring 13 runs in both the first and second innings, West Greene routed Clay-Battelle, W.Va, 26-5, in a three-inning game.

Hunter Hamilton, who was the winning pitcher for the Pioneers, went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Caleb Rice had three singles for West Greene (10-6).

Tyler Chisler had a double for Clay-Battelle.

Monessen 6, Avella 1: Dawayne Howell and Nathan Lynch combined for a two-hitter as Monessen won its third consecutive game by defeating Avella, 6-1, in a Class A Section 2 game.

Howell pitched the first three innings, allowed one hit, one run and struck out six to earn the win. Lynch allowed one hit and no runs to pick up the four-inning save for the Greyhounds.

Monessen (7-2, 8-5) led 2-0 after the first inning and 4-1 after three innings. Cam Frolo had three hits, including a triple, and a sacrifice fly.

Avella falls to 4-6 in the section and 5-8 overall.

Belle Vernon 9, McKeesport 1: Belle Vernon followed up a big win over rival Ringgold Wednesday night with a convincing 9-1 victory over McKeesport in a Class 4A Section 3 game.

The Leopards broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with four runs. They added another run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to pull away even further.

Max Gauden had a four-hit day for Belle Vernon (8-4, 9-5), which has won four of its last five games. Josh Hoffman went 3-for-5 with two RBI and scored twice. Garrett Greco, Logan Seliga and Mason Pascoe all had three hits.

Two players had all four hits for McKeesport (3-9, 4-10). Alex Dalton and Zachary Marcic each had a pair of hits for the Tigers.

West Allegheny 5, Trinity 1: Using four pitchers, West Allegheny surrendered just three hits to Trinity and stayed undefeated in Class 5A Section 3 play with a 5-1 win over the visiting Hillers.

West Allegheny (11-0, 14-2) gradually gave its pitching staff a comfortable lead, scoring once in the third, fourth and fifth innings before a two-run sixth.

Indians’ starter Austin Hendrick allowed one hit and struck out seven over four innings to earn the win.

Camden Zaken, Jared Watson and Clarence Pomykayla each had a hit for Trinity (4-6, 8-9), which is currently in fourth place and the final playoff spot in the section.

In other games, Fort Cherry defeated Bentworth 10-2 to clinch a playoff spot in Class 2A Section 1. The Rangers improve to 5-5 in the section and 8-7 overall. Bentworth falls to 3-7 in the section and 7-9 overall.
