MEADOW LANDS – In a one-sided fight Saturday night, Morgan “Big Chief” Fitch dominated Colby Courter in a six-round unanimous decision on a World Fighting Championships boxing card at The Meadows.
A resident of Charleroi, Fitch scored a 60-53 decision from all three judges and the outcome was never in doubt. Fitch (19-3-1) dominated Courter (13-14) and it was obvious early on that Fitch had advantages in height, weight and skill.
“I felt good in there and used the ring well,” said Fitch. “My jab was short and strong. I feel that I went out and executed like I was supposed to.”
In the first round, Fitch set the tone as he controlled the tempo and busted Courter’s lip. Using laser focus, Fitch used patience in the second round as Coulter went on the defensive and tried to avoid Fitch’s jab.
Fatigue was obvious on the face of Coulter as he was breathing hard through his mouth while Fitch was not winded at all.
“I was ready to go and have stayed in the gym,” Fitch said. “I knew my conditioning would not be an issue.”
Fitch began landing power shots in the third and opened a cut over Coulter’s right eye in the fourth. By the fifth, Fitch had worn Coulter down so much that there wasn’t any power left in his punches.
Fitch dropped Coulter with 17 seconds left in the fight and he was saved by the bell as Fitch was moving in for a fight-closing punch.
While Fitch would have liked to win by knockout, he was happy to get the work in and get back in the win column.
“I am happy with how the fight went and to get some rounds in,” he said. “There are things to work on and I will go back and see what I need to improve on.”
Next up for Fitch will be a return to his native Louisiana for his next fight on June 28.
“It is a tune-up fight down there and we are on the road to bigger fights,” he said. “It is time to make money and go win a belt.”
Fitch appreciated the local support.
“My family and friends were here and there was a nice turnout from Charleroi,” he said. “Fans from all over Pittsburgh showed up and it means a lot to me for everyone to be in my corner.”
The card as a whole was a success for World Fighting Championships as the event was a near sellout.
“We were close to a sellout and we are happy with that,” said WFC president Matt McGovern. “This is our fourth year with The Meadows and we couldn’t be happier. We had 18 fighters from the Pittsburgh area (Saturday) and want to put on good fights for the community.”
The WFC returns to the Event Center inside The Meadows Saturday, Sept. 21.
