High school softball roundup: Poland hits 3 home runs in Trinity’s romp

Trinity’s Kylie Poland had a game Monday that most softball players can only dream about having.
Poland hit three home runs – solo, two-run and three-run shots – and finished with six RBI, powering Class 5A Section 3 champion Trinity to a 17-3 thumping of Western Beaver in a section contest.
Trinity hit five of the game’s seven home runs. Winning pitcher Emma Morgan and Regan Miller also hit round-trippers for the Hillers (10-1, 13-2), who have won eight in a row. Sloan Altman and Bailey Bell each hit a double.
Western Beaver (0-11, 1-14) hit two home runs.
Chartiers-Houston 14, McGuffey 3: Lauren Lober was a one-person wrecking crew for Chartiers-Houston in the Bucs’ 14-3 victory over McGuffey in Class 2A Section 3.
Lober went 3-for-3 with two home runs, a double and five RBI as the Bucs (10-1, 14-3) assured themselves of at least a share of the section title. C-H can win the outright championship by beating Bentworth today.
Winning pitcher Ella Brookman went 4-for-4, scored four runs, drove in two others and struck out seven. Kasey Scears and Kaci Alderson each had a double for C-H.Shelby Dobrzynski and Nicole Reese each doubled for McGuffey (4-8, 4-9).
Belle Vernon 10, McKeesport 0: Sophie Godzak threw her second no-hitter of the season and Mekenzie Sokol belted a grand slam as Belle Vernon rolled to a 10-0 victory in six innings over host McKeesport in Class 4A Section 2.
Godzak walked three and struck out four as Belle Vernon finished with a section record of 5-7. The Leopards are 7-12 overall.
Sokol had the grand slam and also smacked a double to lead Belle Vernon at the plate. Jordan French and Abby Fabin each had a two-run single.
McKeesport is 2-9 both in section and overall.
Waynesburg 2, Ringgold 1: Rachel Elsenheimer hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Meghan Braun pitched a four-hitter as Waynesburg defeated host Ringgold 2-1 in a non-section game.
Ringgold (6-7) had taken a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a two-out error. That was the game’s only run until sixth, when Waynesburg’s Paige Rutan reached on a two-out infield single and Elsenheimer followed with her two-run homer to center field. The Raiders improved their record to 9-8.
Ringgold put its leadoff hitter on base in the sixth inning and a runner on base with two outs in the seventh but was unable to get the tying run.
Losing pitcher Jillian Scherer struck out 10 and allowed only four hits.
Canon-McMillan 10, Peters Township 7: Lindsay Schmidt doubled, tripled and drove in three runs as Canon-McMillan used a fast start to slip past peters Township 10-7 in Class 6A Section 1.
Canon-McMillan (10-3, 11-4), which ran its winning streak to six games, scored four runs in both the first and second innings and led 10-4 after three frames.
The Big Macs then had to hold off a comeback by Peters Township (7-7, 9-9). The Indians scored two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh.
Taylor Eckles and Olivia Ulam each doubled and drove in two runs for Canon-Mac to support the winning pitching of Brooke Perri.
Amberly Wilkes homered and drove in four runs, and Madison Morgan also smacked a home run for PT (7-7, 9-9). Alexandra Bondi had a double.
Mapletown 4, Turkeyfoot 1: Madi Blaker threw a six-hitter and struck out eight as Mapletown defeated visiting Turkeyfoot of PIAA District 5 by a 4-1 score.
The Maples (10-4) led 2-1 before scoring two insurance runs in the sixth inning.
Hannah Hartley had a triple for Mapletown’s big hit and Macee Cree had a double.
Charleroi 11, Washington 0: Kylie Quigley fired a two-hitter and struck out 13 as Charleroi defeated Washington 11-0 in a non-section game.
Taylor Boyd tripled, and Katie Reed and Sam Mavilla each contributed a double for Charleroi (7-9).
Carmichaels 6, Jefferson-Morgan 3: Emily Conklin went 3-for-3, Kylie Sinn struck out nine and Carmichaels took advantage of three Jefferson-Morgan errors and defeated the vsitiing Rockets 6-3 in a non-section game.
Carmichaels (12-5) led 4-0 before Jefferson-Morgan (8-6) scored three times in the top of the fifth, making it a one-run game. The Mikes, however, pushed across single runs in the bottom fo the fifth and sixth innings.
Carmichaels’ Emma Hyatt tripled and scored two runs, and Mia Ranieri doubled and also scored twice.
Jasmine Demaske had two of J-M’s seven hits.
North Allegheny 12, South Fayette 1: Kristen Trunzo tripled, singled, scored twice and drove in three runs to help North Allegheny stop South Fayette, 12-1, in a five inning non-section game.
Alaina Whipkey and Rachel Martindale each knocked in two runs for North Allegheny (13-5).
Madison Potteiger and Lexi Yates each hit a triple for the Lions (10-7).
Bentworth 14, Beth-Center 1: Kaylie Anderson and Jessica Rothka combined to drive in eight run in Bentworth’s 14-1, five inning victory over Beth-Center in a Section 3-AA game.
Bentworth’s win knocks McGuffey and Charleroi from playoff contention.
Anderson went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs and Rothka went 4-for-4 and brought home three more for Bentworth (5-6, 9-9).
Beth-Center is 0-12 and 1-12.
California 15, Avella 4: California scored in each of the five innings to rout Avella 15-4 in Section 2-A.
Makayla Boda scored four runs, Ashley Gush went 2-for-5 with three RBI and Maylaina Pendo doubled and drove in two runs for California (2-8, 4-12).
Julia Bower doubled and had two RBI for Avella (0-9, 0-12).
