High school roundup: Carmichaels upset, shares section title with Chartiers-Houston

D.J. Zimcosky went 3-for-3 with a triple and two-run homer, and also pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning, lifting Brownsville to a 6-5 upset win over Carmichaels on Wednesday in Class 2A Section 1 baseball.

The loss snapped the Mikes’ 11-game winning streak, and combined with Chartiers-Houston’s 13-0 win at Fort Cherry, left Carmichaels (10-2, 14-2) and C-H as the co-champions of the section.

Carmichaels and Chartiers-Houston split two meetings in the regular season and each lost a game to playoff-bound Brownsville (8-4, 12-4), the third-place finisher in the section.

Brownsville used Zimcosky’s home run to forge a 3-1 lead in the third inning, then tacked on three more runs in the fourth for a 6-2 advantage. Carmichaels got a leadoff homer from Al Cree in the bottom of the fourth and a two-run double from Collin Reynolds in the sixth to make it a one-run game.

Zimcosky relieved winning pitcher Zachary Kutek to start the seventh inning.

Chartiers-Houston 13, Fort Cherry 0: Destin Wesier hit two doubles and drove in three runs, and Josh Colletti threw 4 2/3 shutout innings as Chartiers-Houston gained a share of the Class 2A Section 1 title with a 13-0 victory over host Fort Cherry in five innings.

Chartiers-Houston (10-2, 12-4) led 4-0 before breaking the game open with a nine-run fifth inning.

Joey Christy was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs for the Bucs and every C-H starter scored at least one run.

Fort Cherry (5-7, 9-9) qualified for the playoffs as the section’s fourth-place team. The Rangers were held to three hits.

Waynesburg 7, Beth-Center 2: Ryley Metheny hit a three-run double in the first inning and Luke Robinson struck out eight over 41/3 innings to power Waynesburg to a 7-2 victory over visiting Beth-Center in a matchup of playoff-bound teams from Class 3A Section 3.

Waynesburg (9-3, 10-4) tied for second place with McGuffey. The Raiders have won five in a row. Beth-Center (7-5, 7-9) finishes as the fourth-place team in the section.

Robinson and reliever Kyle Shriver combined on a six-hitter. David Morris and Drake Zellie each had two singles for the Bulldogs.

Bentworth 7, Frazier 4: Austyn Pistilli and Michael Vittone each drove in two runs, lifting Bentworth to a 7-4 victory over host Frazier in Class 2A Section 1.

Bentworth took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning, when the Bearcats broke the game open by scoring five times. That was enough cushion for winning pitcher Justin Kisner and reliever Josh Young, who scattered eight hits and walked only one batter.

Kisner helped his cause with a double for Bentworth (4-8, 8-10). Frazier, which is 6-10 overall, finished 3-9 in the section after a 2-2 start.

Monessen 3, Jefferson-Morgan 2: Monessen ran its winning streak to six games with a 3-2 victory over visiting Jefferson-Morgan in Section 2-A.

Greyhounds pitcher Dawayne Howell and Nathan Lynch combined on a seven-hitter and pitched out of trouble often as Jefferson-Morgan (7-5, 7-9) left 12 runners on base.

There were no extra-base hits in the game. Monessen (10-2, 11-6), which did all of its scoring in the first inning, had two hits from Cam Frolo.

Ringgold 13, Uniontown 3: Koby Bubash went 3-for-3 with a home run, double, three runs and four RBI, powering Ringgold to a 13-3 victory over host Uniontown and a share of the Class 4A Section 3 title.

Ringgold (11-3, 12-5) shared the title with Thomas Jefferson.

The Rams beat Uniontown by putting together a 13-hit attack and a pair of five-run innings. Nick Kolano drove in four runs and Sam Daerr had a double.

Winning pitcher Josh Peters threw five shutout innings.

Elizabeth Forward 14, Belle Vernon 12: Elizabeth Forward erupted for eight runs in the fifth inning for a 14-12 victory over Belle Vernon in a Section 3 game in Class 4A.

Patrick Minda went 4-for-4 with a double, three runs and four RBI for EF (8-6, 11-7). Nate Holma doubled, tripled and drove in three runs and Chase Vaughn went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.

Andrew Sokol, Josh Hooffman and Cole Naylor each drove in two runs for BV (8-6, 10-7).

Mapletown 11, Geibel 1: An 11-run first inning provided Mapletown with all the runs needed in an 11-1 victory over Geibel in Section 2-A

Noah Haines had a double and three RBI for Mapletown (2-10, 2-13). Vince Walick had a double and two RBI and Dalton Engelhardt a double. Lance Stevenson had two hits, two runs and two RBI.

Geibel fell to 0-12 and 0-13.

McGuffey 21, Washington 2: Seth Burgdolt doubled, drove in two and scored four times to push McGuffey to a 21-2 win over Washington in a five-inning Section 3-AAA game.

Brock Wallace and Ryan Sullivan each had three RBI for McGuffey (9-3, 10-5). Brayden Kay, Logan Sibert and Chad Fleischauer each knocked in two runs and Jake Orr scored four times.

Washington fell to 3-14, 1-11 in the section.

Softball

Carmichaels 6, Mapletown 3: Gina Ranieri drove in three runs, Kyle Sinn struck out 14 and Carmichaels scored four runs in the bottom fo the sixth to rally for a 6-3 win over Mapletown in a non-section game.

Mapletown (10-5) led 3-0 in the third inning and 3-2 entering the bottom of the sixth. The Maples’ defense committed four errors, which led to five unearned runs by Carmichaels.

Shelbee McCann had three hits and Emma Holaren drove in two runs for Carmichaels (13-5).

Hannah Dusenberry had a triple and Faith Burkholder-Walter doubled for Mapletown.

West Greene 7, Bentworth 2: In the final tuneup before another playoff run, West Greene stopped Bentworth, 7-2, in a non-section game.

Mackenzie Carpenter doubled and drove in two run for West Greene (16-4). Winning pitcher Jade Renner struck out five over the final 42/3 innings.

Renner, McKenna Lampe, Kaitlyn Rizor and Jersey Wise each had two hits for West Greene.

Albert Gallatin 17, Waynesburg 6: Albert Gallatin pounded four home runs in a 17-6 victory over Waynesburg in a non-section game.

Maddie Flowers homered twice and drove in five runs for Albert Gallatin (9-6, 10-7). Marie Sutton homered, doubled and brought home five runs. And Rylea Hlatkay homered and drove in two runs.

Paige Rutan doubled and knocked in a run for Waynesburg (5-8, 9-10). Jordan Sibert, Selena Phillips and Kaylee Turcheck each had an RBI.

Connellsville 7, Trinity 5: Connellsvile broke a tie by scoring one run in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to beat Trinity 7-5 in a non-section game.
