Wild Things rally, win season opener in 11

O’FALLON, MO. — Hector Roa drove in three, including the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning, Lucas Herbert had four hits and the Wild Things rallied from an early four-run deficit to beat the River City Rascals 7-5 Thursday night in the Frontier League season opener.
Roa’s double to right field scored J.J. Fernandez, who began the 11th inning at second base in the International Tiebreaker format. The run gave Washington its first lead of the night at 6-5. Roa moved to third base on a fly ball and scored on Herbert’s fourth hit.
River City took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, hitting back-to-back home runs against Washington starter Michael Austin. However, the Wild Things’ bullpen was spectacular. Four relievers combined for 5 2/3 scoreless innings.
Zach Strecker pitched the 11th inning for his 42nd career save with Washington, setting the franchise record.
James Meeker (1-0) threw three perfect innings of relief. He struck out five.
Preston Scott hit a two-run homer for Washington.
