There are 14 local teams that qualified for the WPIAL baseball playoffs but only one of them was given a seed higher than fifth in their respective classification, it was revealed Friday when pairings were released.

California (15-1), the Section 2 champion, was given the top seed in Class A. The Trojans have won 14 consecutive games and have not lost since March 28.

California has not allowed more than four runs in a game and has an amazing .551 team on-base percentage.

The Trojans also are the only local team to receive a first-round bye. They will play their initial postseason game in the quarterfinals against either section rival West Greene or Eden Christian. The Pioneers will play Eden Christian in a first-round game Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Upper St. Clair’s Boyce Mayview Park.

In other first-round Class A games Wednesday, Monessen, the No. 6 seed, will play St. Joseph’s at Seton Hill University (2 p.m.) and Jefferson-Morgan will face Bishop Canevin at Boyce Mayview (4:30 p.m.).

The only other local team to gain a top-five seed is Peters Township, the No. 5 seed, in Class 6A. The Indians will play Butler in the opening round Thursday at Boyce Mayview (7 p.m.).

In Class 5A on Thursday, Trinity will play Shaler at North Allegheny (7 p.m.) and South Fayette plays Montour at Boyce Mayview (2 p.m.).

Defending state champion Ringgold is seeded No. 5 in Class 4A. The Rams, who shared the section title with Thomas Jefferson, will play Mt. Pleasant on Wednesday (4 p.m.) at Seton Hill. Thomas Jefferson is the No. 3 seed. Belle Vernon will play Beaver at Fox Chapel in another Class 4A first-round game Thursday (2 p.m.).

Three local teams qualified in Class 3A with Waynesburg, at No. 8, getting the highest seed. The Raiders play Freedom in the opening round Wednesday (7 p.m.) at Boyce Mayview. A win puts Waynesburg up against top-seeded Freeport in the quarterfinals.

McGuffey is the No. 10 seed and will play Burrell on Wednesday (2 p.m.) at West Mifflin. Beth-Center will be at North Allegheny to play New Brighton at 4 p.m.

Carmichaels, which shared the Section 1 title with Chartiers-Houston, is seeded sixth in Class 2A. The Mikes play Jeannette at Seton Hill on Thursday (2 p.m.). Chartiers-Houston was given the No. 8 seed and will play Laurel in the opening round at the Burkett Complex on Thursday (4 p.m.). Fort Cherry, the fourth-place team from Section 1, will play second-seeded Serra Catholic at Boyce Mayview on Thursday (4:30 p.m.).

Dates have not been posted by the WPIAL for quarterfinals baseball games.
