Wild Things’ bats boom against Schaumburg

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – The Wild Things unleashed a 17-hit attack, including a home run by Trevor Abrams, and held off a ninth-inning comeback by Schaumburg to defeat the Boomers 6-4 Wednesday afternoon.
Wander Franco drove in two runs, and Abrams and Brett Marr, the Nos. 8 and 9 hitters in the Washington lineup, each had three hits. Every Wild Things starter had at least one hit. Washington had entered the game with a .224 team batting average.
Starter Michael Austin (1-1) pitched 5 2/3 innings and left with a 5-2 lead. Tyler Barss followed with 2 1/3 innings of relief. Zach Strecker got his second save but Schaumburg did score one run in the ninth after loading the bases.
Abrams started the third with a solo homer off Boomers starter Connor Reed and Franco had an RBI grounder that made it 2-0.
Schaumburg tied the score in the fourth when Clint Hardy hit a home run just inside the left-field foul pole. Washington, however, scored three runs in the sixth off reliever Erik Martinez (0-1) and tacked on one more in the seventh. Schaumburg’s Nick Oddo had a solo homer in the seventh inning.
