Cal’s Conte honored
Following a program-record 37 wins, California University of Pennsylvania head coach Mike Conte was selected the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Atlantic Region Coach of the Year on Wednesday evening.
Conte earned the honor for the first time since 2010 after being named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Coach of the Year earlier this month. It marked the eighth time that Conte garnered the accolade from the conference and first time since 2013.
Conte led the program to a 37-15 overall mark to eclipse the previous mark for wins accomplished back in 2007. The Vulcans also posted a 19-9 record in PSAC West action, setting the record for most divisional wins ever in program history. Cal made its 16th appearance in the PSAC Tournament under Conte and posted a 2-2 overall mark, including a comeback win over No. 7 Millersville.
Conte mentored six All-PSAC West selections this season with seniors Eric Fairman and Ben Maudie earning first-team laurels. He has eclipsed 130 All-PSAC West honorees in his career, and Fairman became the eighth PSAC West Athlete of the Year during his tenure.
Pony baseball
Andrew Kocak doubled and Josh Ciotti went 3-for-3 to help Canon-Mac No. 2 beat Ace Sporting Goods 10-9 in Pony crossover action.
Max Dotson hit a solo home run, Gibby Havanis tripled and Franco Canali went 3-for-3 for Ace.
In the majors
Eugenio Suarez hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning off Cubs reliever Steve Cishek, rallying the Cincinnati Reds over Chicago 6-5. Joey Votto drew a leadoff walk from Cishek and Suarez hit the next pitch for his 14th home run.
- Garrett Cooper hit a grand slam with two outs in the ninth inning and the Miami Marlins won their sixth in a row, rallying past Detroit 5-2 to finish a terrible homestand for the Tigers. The Marlins, who had the worst record in the majors last week, extended the longest active winning streak in the big leagues. The Tigers wrapped up an 0-9 stay at Comerica Park against Houston, Oakland and the Marlins.
- Hunter Renfroe hit a tiebreaking, three-run home run in the eighth inning, Greg Garcia and Austin Hedges also went deep, and the San Diego Padres beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 for their fourth straight win. Toronto became the first team to start two players with Hall of Fame fathers after calling up Cavan Biggio – son of Craig – for his big league debut. Biggio started at second and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was at third.
