PT tennis duo advances

Peters Township’s Kat Wang and Marra Bruce advanced to the WPIAL Class AAA tennis doubles championship.

The duo won their first two matches Wednesday by scores of 10-1 and 10-0. They then were victorious in their semifinal match against Fox Chapel’s Carissa Shepard and Catherine Petrovich, 6-4 and 6-1.

Wang and Bruce will play Latrobe’s Jenna Bell and Carolin Walters for the title today at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Women’s soccer

The California University women’s soccer team was unable to overcome a pair of goals within the opening five minutes on Wednesday evening and dropped a 3-1 contest to Pitt-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

The Vulcans fell to 2-5 overall and 1-5 in divisional action. The Mountain Cats improve to 3-5 this season with a 3-4 mark in conference play.

Girls soccer

Madison Shook recorded her second shutout of the season and Trinity won its fifth straight match, 5-0, over Obama Academy in Section 3-AAA.

Alyssa Clutter, Olivia Mauro and Hannah Abbondanza scored for the Hillers (5-3-1, 6-4-1).

Obama Academy fell to 2-6-1 and 6-6-2.

  • Jasmine Manning shut down McGuffey’s offense in Bentworth’s 3-0 victory in a Section 2-A match.

Jocelyn Timlin, Reagan Schreiber and Caroline Rice each had a goal for the Bearcats (8-0, 10-1), who led 1-0 at halftime.

McGuffey fell to 6-3 and 7-5.

  • Rhea Kijowski and Ashlyn Basinger each scored twice to help Waynesburg shut out Southmoreland, 6-0, in a Section 3-AA match.

Jillian Kijowski and Kylie Sinn each scored a goal for the Raiders (4-4, 6-5). McKenzie Booth stopped nine shots for her third shutout.

Southmoreland fell to 2-7 and 3-7.

  • Annabel Thomas had a hat trick and Sammy Snyder two goals as Canon-McMillan routed Baldwin, 7-0, in a Class 4A Section 2 match.

Angelina Hofrichter and Lexi Twaddle also scored for the Big Macs. Abby Hipkins and Ashley Barzd combined for six saves and the shutout for C-M (6-4, 9-4).

Baldwin dropped to 3-7 in the section and 3-7-1 overall.

  • Belle Vernon’s offense erupted for a 14-0 victory over Albert Gallatin in a Section 2-AAA match.

Jillian Butchki scored four goals, and Morgan Einodshofer and Farrah Reader had three goals apiece for the Leopards (9-0, 10-2).

AG is 0-8 and 1-11.
