In college wrestling

With most of the team staying in Waynesburg to prepare for the upcoming Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championships, a small group of Yellow Jacket wrestlers traveled to Saturday’s John Summa Invitational, which was hosted by Baldwin Wallace.

Senior Dillion Charlton led the way for Waynesburg with a 2-2 day on the mats at 174 pounds. He scored a win by pin and another by technical fall. Fellow senior Dan Verhovsek logged multiple wins at the event, going 2-2 with all four bouts going the distance and ending in decision at 184 pounds.

Freshman Austin Ryan of Burgettstown picked up his first collegiate win, which came by forfeit. That victory was part of his run to a fourth-place finish at 125 pounds.

Sophomore Zach Baughman and senior Adam Rigney earned victories.

In college track

The Waynesburg University track & field team hit the road on Saturday to compete in the Jim Wuske Invitational, which was hosted by the University of Mount Union. There was no team scoring at the event.

Junior JaWuan Jones was strong in sprints, particularly the 60-meter dash. Jones just missed out on making the finals after placing 10th with a time of 7.22 seconds. He was the top Division III finisher that wasn’t a member of the host team, which is ranked third in the country in Division III. Jones’ time currently ranks him third in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) this season.

Freshman Eric Townsend II finished a split-second behind Jones with the 11th-place mark of 7.24 seconds. Townsend got revenge on his teammate by besting him in the 200 meters. The first-year sprinter placed 10th overall with a time of 23.06 seconds. Jones logged the number-13 time of 23.48 seconds.

Junior Matt Durgin led the Yellow Jackets in the distance events with his performance in the 5,000 meters. Durgin took third overall with a mark of 16:42.94. That time puts him in fourth place on the season for the PAC.

Townsend posted some of the team’s top performances in the field event. He posted the second-place showing in the long jump after logging a leap of 6.61 meters (21’8.25″) and finished ninth in the triple jump thanks to a hop, skip and a jump of 12.75 meters (41-10).

The Yellow Jacket women featured their own share of outstanding performances, including a win in the 3,000 meters by sophomore Aubrey Wingeart. Wingeart broke the tape in 10:33.60, which is the fastest time in the PAC this year. She also placed fifth in the 800 meters (2:29.02).

Junior Nicole Shelton took seventh in the 3,000 meters (11:14.46), while sophomore Gloria Reed logged the number-eight time in the mile (5:46.20).
