Small college roundup: Waynesburg women advance in PAC tourney
Brooke Fuller scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds to help Waynesburg to a 63-53 victory over Thiel in first round of the Presidents’ Athletic Confrerence tournament Monday night at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
The Yellow Jackets advanced to today’s quarterfinals at top-seeded Washington & Jefferson.
Anika Dansby had a double-double for Waynesburg, 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Thiel’s Destiny Johnson scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.
California 62, Slippery Rock 45: Three players scored in double figures to lead California University to a 62-45 victory over Slippery Rock in a PSAC West game.
The win moves Cal’s record to 15-4 in the PSAC and 20-4 overall. Slippery Rock fell to 6-14 in the conference and 11-15 overall.
Dejah Terrell led the way with 15 points. Brionna Allen scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Shauna Harrison had 12 points on the strength of three three–point field goals.
Jamiyah Johnson tossed in a game-high 18 points for Slippery Rock.
Men’s result
Slippery Rock 87, California 81: Tyler Fredrick and Frankie Hughes combined for 47 points and Slippery Rock snapped California’s four-game winning streak by defeating the Vulcans 87-81 in a PSAC West game at the Convocation Center.
Frederick led The Rock (12-8, 16-10) with 24 points and Hughes tossed in 23, including five three-point field goals.
The Rock made seven three-pointers in the first half as it raced out to a 42-37 lead at intermission. All five starters scored in double figures, which kept The Rock in the lead until a free throw by Cal’s Brent Pegram tied the score at 65-65 with 6:11 remaining. A three-pointer by Frederick gave Slippery Rock the lead for good.
Philip Alston paced Cal (14-6, 19-7) with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Pegram and Zyan Collins each scored 18 points. The Vulcans made only 7 of 37 three-point attempts.
