Orioles select Weston in draft
Former Canon-McMillan High School standout right-handed pitcher Cam Weston was selected Monday on the second day of Major League Baseball’s three-day amateur draft.
The Baltimore Orioles made Weston, who recently completed his junior season at the University of Michigan, the first pick in the draft’s eighth round.
A 2021 All-Big Ten selection, Weston has been rated as one of the best pitching prospects in the conference and had a strong finish to the season this spring, helping Michigan mount an impressive postseason run while winning the Big Ten tournament.
Though he was a career starter, circumstances pushed Weston into a closing role towards the end of the regular season and he responded in impressive fashion. After not making a relief appearance in his first two seasons, Weston entered a game May 19 against Rutgers and logged a save. That was the first of four saves and a win for Weston in eight critical appearances, including six postseason games.
An All-Big Ten Tournament performer at relief pitcher, Weston struck out 11 batters in seven scoreless innings en route to an NCAA Tournament win against Oregon in which he allowed one hit in 2.1 innings.
This year, Weston had a 5-4 record, four saves, 4.74 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 81.1 innings while walking only 38. Weston is currently pitching for the Wareham Gatemen in the Cape Cod League and has been dominant. He has a 4-0 record, two saves and an 0.84 ERA with 21 strikeouts in 21.1 innings.
Weston is the first former Canon-McMillan player selected in the MLB draft since pitcher Matt Pierpont was chosen by Colorado in 2013.
